Oil pressure

My next question.....during the engine rebuild, right now I am adjusting the valve lash and learning what a pain it can be, I am turning the engine over quite alot. It has assembly grease heavily on all bearings etc. When I am ready to start it for the first time ( in about 71 years!) what is a tried and proven way to pre-lube the engine or just start it, watch the oil pressure gage, and shut it down if pressure is not built up within a few seconds?

Go to the area in the grey banner "Thread/Thread starter" then to the right on the same line click on "Search this Forum" type in your question.

Lots of information!

You might have to go to an auto parts store or special website, but there is a tool out there that you hook an a drill and the end fits on you oil pump drive gear on you distribtor where it would go and hook up, prime prime prime until you see about 40-60 PSI then get your distributor in there before the oil drains down and hit the starter, mine in my jeep is at 50 lbs at start up. :)

the best I could find is a priming tool made by tavia and it's on ebay, and there is a site I found called vintage v8 restoration. Specializing in Flathead V8's. If you google Flathead v8 oil pump priming tool, there is a video an how to make one,the one I found I think it's for a modern v8 ya might have to make one. But what matters is that I tried to help and tried to find it. :) I'm doin my homework, getting my knowladge and tryin to help at the same time :) God bless friend :)

before you put the oil pan on, put some vasaline on the bottom of the pump, pick up tube. this will help start the pumps suction. remove the spark plugs so the engine does not fire and turn the starter over with the key. watch the pressure gauge. it should move up some, if it does, put plugs in and fire the engine and watch guage.....done.

The problem with this information is it is totally useless. Those of us that know flatheads know this, but someone unfamiliar will think this might exist. You are doing a disservice to the hobby.

cant blame a guy for tryin huh :) I thought if there is a tool to prime the oil pump now there was one then, theres always tools for certain jobs, I thought maybe there was one for this. I mean surely people weren't stupid enough to dry start an engine back then.

Seems to me it was Rumbleseat, a few years ago, that mentioned spinning an old Falcon oil pump in a bucket that was plumbed into a flatty for pre-startup with a flexible line? Maybe that was on a different forum... ..B.

Pull the plugs and spin the engine, usually get pressure in a few seconds. if not remove plug on top of oil pump boss and pore some gear oil down to the pump, don't take much.
