No Frills Back To Basics

I was reading in The Ford Model "A" "As Henry Built It" that interior dash etc on most all pickups were painted black to match the interior. Mine is red but I'm thinking of going back to black. Has anyone else painted their interior black and if so, any special way to do it?

Also read some great threads on here about black wheels (I've got wheat/cream colored wheels) and am thinking about painting them black also. I'm a no frills guy and would like to get the truck back to the basics the way it came from the factory.

Love the simplicity of the Model A pickups!

A lot of the original trucks I have seen over the years, were green with a green gas tank, and cab back, roof bows and such. Door panels and seat were a greenish black. I always though the inside matched the out side color. Seats and door panels were all greenish black, but I could be wrong.

According to the book the interior was painted black to better go with the interior upholstery. Also states all wheels were painted black as was the radiator cover and headlight buckets.

Thanks, now I'm trying to decide if I want to buy five wheels and have them sandblasted and painted or use mine.

I've heard of a lot of guys having the wheels powder coated. Allegedly they are harder to chip.

I applaud you going back to the basics. Go for the black interior and wheels. If you go for the powder coat on the wheels... there was a thread a while back about the subject and I thought Brent Terry has some good insight about choosing a powder coater. It’s like choosing a paint shop, the prep work and application determines its durability and finish. Good luck and show us some pics when it’s done.

Here it is...

Black works for my Wheels ! Mine was Jazzed up with Stainless when I got it !!
At least if you paint the Headlight buckets and the 30 shell they wont rust !!!
Tail light buckets were Black as well and no rear bumper took one off the back of mine !!!

I looked it up in my book the Ford Model A. as Henry Built it.
You are right. I learned some thing today. Thanks

My original '31 pickup had a green gas tank to match the outer body color. Whole truck was brush painted black a zillion years ago. Interior was black, including top bows, dash rail and window moldings.

sconnors, my wheels where Tacoma cream also and redid them black. I think the truck looks much better with black wheels. I went with powder coating. The powder coating shop sand blasted to bare metal, then applied a zinc primer coat, a black base coat, then a thick clear coat. The wheels look great and they'll never need waxing. The interior metal of my truck is body color, including the top bows. The dash rail is black to match the interior upholstery.

In your truck photo, is that the Stephentown Federated Church in the background and the old barn on S. Stephentown Road just behind you truck?

I am with Al in NY on this one. Inside of my 31 pickup cab was factory painted body color. Only dash rail and window mouldings were painted black.

I'm with Al also. If you look at the Judging Standards and Paint and Finish Guide the interior was body
color except the dash rail , windshield pillars, and window mouldings which were black.

Time to lose the shiny radiator shell and head light buckets also? I agree I like the look of a work purpose truck. I also like black wheels as you can tell by my coupe.

Going back and rereading what the books says.
The book does not say any thing about the gas tank. Here is what it says.
The interior of the cab including the garnish moldings, belt rail and panel, was painted black.

Previous edition of judging standards states:
28-30 closed cap(82-A) - inside cab - body color painted finish
30-31 closed cap(82-B) - inside cab - body color or black painted finish

I'm going to paint the cab on my 30 model pickup tomorrow. I 'm going to paint the inside and out side the same color of blue. Right or wrong that is what I like.

George, I think that is the way to go. Henry was cheap and I can't see Ford doing a two step paint job with some sort of masking step in between. One step, one color.
