Gas tank valve size

Been have some fuel flow problems traced it back to crud blocking the shut off valve, Tank actually looks pretty clean but once I blew the line back into the tank got a good flow. So since I have it down to the valve I plan to put in the drip leg rather then the filter screen the vendors sell. I still have to drain the tank and remove the valve so just wondering if anyone knows the size of the valve end going into the tank so I can have the parts on hand. If not I will figure it out once I remove the valve.
 
I was thinking the filter was more of a patch then a solution; but have read some old threads I see both methods work. So I have also ordered a filter and will decide once I get the tank empty and valve out.

If you have a fair amount of junk in the bottom then it might be good to use the leg to drain it off. Once the leg quits draining off junk, them remove it and install the tank filter. My tanks are spotless, but I still use the filter. It's just good to have to ensure a good fuel flow.:)
 
A different tack to take.

Pull the valve and replace with a ball valve- temporarily. Put something in the tank that you feel safe sloshing around. Slosh a lot and drain fast, filtering the output, repeat till mostly clear.

Put a short piece of 1/4" copper tubing in the valve. This will prevent the crap in the tank from settling into the valve, but allow the crap to get in to the line.

Put original valve back in place.

Make sure you have the original Ford filter screens in place for your given configuration. Drive frequently monitoring the screens. After a bunch of tanks it is likely that most of the crap will be gone. Take out the tube so you can use your whole tank.

Unlike the filter in the tank, you are actually fixing the problem and making the car more reliable.
 
Why not leave the standpipe filter in place permanently for protection? NEVER heard of one plugging up. They provide great flow, With 1/2 tank of gas, I got a 6" stream of gas from disconnected line at the carbuerator!!! Bill W.
 
If you got crud blocking the shut off valve. The stuff had to come from someplace. If you got a small airport near by I suggest you go there and ask to have one of their mech. take a Boreascope and look into you tank where you can't see. The crude just didn't fall into your gas tank. It's rusting somewhere and even with the filters your carb is going to keep blocking up. It's a pain but you may need to bit the bullet and have it boiled out and repainted after you seal the tank. Bill Hersell out of NJ has some sealer that will work along with others.
 
I have good luck with the dirty leg. Works well with the fine rust that washes off the top of the tank. The filter is a stand pipe that traps water and rust in the bottom of the tank that promotes future rust. I prefer to get rid of the trash.
 
Why do I bother to suggest proven ideas/techniques/advice/etc, when MOST folks just stick to their ways of doin' it anyhow! Or just wait for a poster that agrees with his pre-determined way of doin' it! Like if your mind was made up already, why did some even ask a question?
On this "sealing" the tank with the goop stuff, I've seen too many tanks with that grey scum floating in the tank & the owner tryin' to "fish" it out with a wire hook!! GOD! What a mess to deal with!! You think you got problems now? If you could have a specialist open the tank top & do it "RIGHT"----That would be the way to go! In the interim, the stainless standpipe will keep you runnin' well & will get you home for supper! Bill W. (Sorry if I sound KRANKY, I ain't perfect, either!)

The hub welded in the tank for the fuel valve is on the bottom side of the tank. If you make sure the filter seats as far down as it can in the valve you won't trap much gas. I installed one a few days ago, I was curious about how much unusable gas would be in the tank with the filter. I put a quart of gas in a jar poured it in the tank-- had gas running in to the sediment bowl immediately. The pencil filter traps very little if any unused gas. They work very well. I know this two ways, 1 I have solved the problem on several As over the years and 2 Mr Bill agrees.
 
I agree with Timothy............see #7.:)

I stick with what has worked well for me and others, such as my original points and condenser work fine, so why change?:confused::D

Bill - I couldn't agree more with your statement.

But as the one who created the dirty leg contraption as you call it, I wonder why you felt the need to trash the idea.....especially when you apparently don't like it when people don't follow your advice. Seems a bit contradictory to me.

The fundamental difference between installing a filter in the tank and the dirty leg is that the the filter traps the contaminants in the tank (and they will sooner or later clog the filter) while the dirty leg removes the contaminants from the tank.

To each his own.........

Bad choice of words, Tim, I'm sorry. I suppose the dirty leg would be O.K. is the tank had smaller amounts & size of trash/rust. In more severe cases, the standpipe keeps it contained in the tank, like when a large flake can literally "block" off the outlet hole to the valve. Bill W.

Sorry I upset you, Tim, I try to give advice that has worked well for ME. If others don't want to follow my advice, I don't give a crap. I don't pretend to know EVERYTHING! If a LOT'S of folks share your sentiments, maybe it's time I bow out & just stick to my own stuff.
Also, contraption was NOT meant to be a derogatory term, to me it is something put together from many unusual parts, to serve a specific purpose. I wasn't calling it a "RUBE GOLDBERG"!

I drained the tank and removed the valve. Gas that came out was clean there is some fine crud on the bottom picked up a little on a stick magnet . The fill filter at the top was cruddy more of a yellow substance maybe mud then rust but that looks like it has been in for a long time so will clean that before I put it back. After rereading some old posting and this one it looks like the condition Jerry Parr referenced in a post above so decided to go with the leg for now I use a ball valve at the bottom so I could check and clean with out dealing with the gas in the tank. I took it for a short run about 6 miles and no problems so so far so good. Below is the set up I used
