1934 Cordoba Grey Paint

I'm hoping someone out there in Fordbarn land can help me out I've decided to paint my roadster Cordoba Grey and my painter tells me that with the new water based paints you can have the original 34 paint code but there is no way to cross reference the original code with water based paints? My painter tells me that if I can find someone who has painted there car the correct Cordoda Grey color and they could send me a paint sample then he can match the paint color exactly. Is there anyone who still has a little paint left over that would consider spraying me a sample? Thanks...

I have noticed you are making an effort to keep your roadster very origional. That's good. However, Iam curious, why are you painting it with a water base modern paint? Possibly base coat top coat. None of my business. It's your car to do whatever you desire. Just curious.
 
I'd have to agree with above comment, but it's none of my business either. I've got some (so-called) cordoba grey that was mixed by one of the V8 Times advertisers, Color-ite, back when Ed was still supporting us guys. It's acrylic enamel. But, who's to say that it's 'correct'. I've bought several (a few?) different Ford colors from Ed over the years, and I wouldn't say that ANY of them exactly match the color of an original car. I tried multiple times to get what I thought was a match for original 47 maize yellow, and for original 34 vineyard green, and Ed comes 'sort-of' close, but really not close enough. I haven't held this cordoba grey paint next to an original car yet, so I don't know how close it is. I could make a small sample available, if you somehow think it's going to help. (But, I have my doubts.)
ps... I should have added, my comments are just observation, and not complaints. I'm truly grateful for what Ed has done for me.

Well I was under the impression that base coat top coat was not available in Canada, I really don't know I'm not a painter so I'm all for being enlightened!
 
I would trust Ed's color before say one by Hirsch. I wish Ed was still mixing paint. I am happy with what I got from him. I am curious as to what value BobH puts in comparing fresh paint with 70 to 80 year old paint. I would think even if a car was kept in the dark the shade would change due to age alone. What we see now on an original car isn't what someone saw when the car was new. Anything we come up with now is an educated guess of sorts, nobody can say for certain. Of course, my opinion only!
 
Yes, I agree with the comments from 'duece'... When I make a comparison on this cordoba grey, it is against two original cars that a friend owns, both of them really rubbed & shined, giving them the best possible appearance. And, just the simple act of polishing and waxing, changes the apparent visible color. I agree that what is visible today, is not the same as what was seen 79 or 80 years ago. I'm certainly no expert on paint or colors. and obviously what any of us want to see is in the 'eye of the beholder'. My main 'issue' is with folks that use modern materials which include a clearcoat, and then try to pass it off as 'original-restored', and have it point-judged at a national meet. If I were a points judge, I would give them a zero, if I could detect a clearcoat. In my opinion, the 'luster' is all wrong. Obviously, this is all just my opinion... and, we all know what that counts for. :)
 
Steve, I think the responces you have gotten are positive advice. I agree, with age,and various conditions you will find your color, cordoba grey, to dark, light, etc.
A recap of the advise given is: A paint job is important to the results of the restoration of your car. It will be EXPEN$IVE. It is almost perminant. You won't change it . So, making the right decision will require some research. Also, if you don't heard what to think is right from your painter. Get another painter.
Wasn't your car Codoba grey before this rebuild?

Yes it was Cordoba Grey but it was much lighter than most of the Cordoba Grey that I had seen and mine was painted in 1979.
 
Have you looked behind the rumble seat cushion.
This is an original 34 . It is a little on the olive side.

I do have the original paint under my hood It could be scanned to give the ppg formula ,Maybe as close as you get .
