I have a 54 Mercury with rebuilt 256 original Y-Block. The car runs just OK with the stock Holley 4bbl as original. I have had trouble with the dependability of this carb. Hard starting when warm , flooding out , and just real sluggish performance.
I want to upgrade the carb and also change the distributor to 57 and newer style with vacuum/mechanical advance, eliminating the original load-o-matic distributor. I have read much on this subject and also talked to Bubba in Indianapolis. He is going to do a but change on my distributor and convert the bottom end of a 57 distributor to fit my oil pump drive and cam gear. So that part will be upgraded when I get the modifyied distributor back from him.
My question now is what carburetor should I switch to?? I am thinking about using a Carter WCFB that Mercury used starting in 55/56. This carb has the same bolt pattern as my 54 intake manifold, so that would be a real plus, not having to use any carb to intake manifold adapter plates. The later model Holley , Edelbrock and even Autolite 4100 all have a broader bolt pattern and would require me to use an adapter to fit the stock intake manifold. My question is this on the Carter WCFB......is it compatible with the later vac/mechanical distributor advance system ?? Am I gaining by using this carb?
I must add that I am not interested in super high performance or racing applications. I just want to wake up this y-block and get some dependable performance. I have had bad experiences with the tea pot, like flooding out and poor acceleration.
Would appreciate hearing from anybody that has switched out these 54 Mercs or even the 54 Ford 239 ?? These are smaller ported heads that Ford used before 55/56/57 models, when they came out with the 292 and 312 engines, which had bigger heads.
Thanks for any comments or suggestions.
