Bed painting

It got up into the high 60s today, Whoo Hoo! So it was bed painting time, the sun shining thru the plastic redneck paint booth warmed it up to 75*F good enough for single stage urethane. Got a few drips to fix but not too bad!

Thanks for the nice comments! I'm glad the bulk of it is history, I hate painting, nerve racking, dangerous, & messy, but rewarding at the same time!

Nice work, looks good. Ventilation or mask? Reason im asking is a setup im considering. Looks great!

I have a cheapo Walmart 3 speed box fan on the end pulling out the fumes, mist, and flying bugs, garage doors are shut. You better wear a full paint suit, head cover, latex gloves, and at the very least a full face respirator, this is the one I got from Grainger, with the baddest toxic chemical 3 part filters they had. It is still not what you are supposed to use, (Fresh supplied air system) but it will give you about 70% respiatory protection, get in & get out quick! I have never painted a car or anything automotive before, and I'm done with it!

Can you smell the paint while painting?? If so, you are harming yourself. I haven't found anything except an air supplied mask that totally protects you. I did a quick small paint job-about 15 minutes- in 2010 without a mask and ended up at the hospital with a tightening chest, turned out it was the isosyanates(spelling) in the modern paints that caused the problem. Not worth it.

Cecil, you are right about that, only a fresh air supplied system will protect you fully. This full face mask does a pretty good job with new filters, at first you can't smell anything, but the filters clog up fast and there is some leakage around the mask if you have a skinny head like me. After about 30 minutes or so you can start to smell the paint, and I got outta there! I only had this bed left to paint, after doing the whole rest of the truck, still I will never paint another vehicle again, too scary! Even if I had access to a real paint booth and the proper gear, I'm not interested in being a painter. Now that it's over I'm glad it turned out pretty nice and I did it myself, and saved a TON of money! It is really hard to find a painter who has his own shop, who is willing to work with you and paint body parts seperately to be assembled later, they will paint the whole vehicle, put together if you drive it to them, Heck I have never even had my truck on the road! So I made the decision to do everything myself, piece by piece and put it all together @ home, may not be the right way, but this is a learning experience.
