You know about the subsequent cars I'm sure but the original car was created by Barris I have heard the story about it first hand. The producers brought the car to him and a four hundred dollar budget they also supplied the wheels the brush guard came off an employees truck and the color the flag and the number were all Barris. Now where did that info come from?
I used to build & tour cars on the ISCA show car circuit back in the late 70's & early 80's, and I personally know several people who built General Lee cars specifically for use by Warner Brothers. There was a packet that a potential builder could obtain that listed out all the specs. to how the car was to be constructed. It also told how much they would pay for the car delivered. It was up to you to find a car and build it to their specs within the $$ budget they allotted. When you were done, you submitted it for purchase and if after inspection it met all the criteria, then they would cut you a check. While Barris may have also built one or two, the General Lee was NOT his brainchild or creation. It mght be worth adding that Geo. Barris took much credit for vehicles that he never actually constructed, ...and in some "in the know" folk's minds, Sam was the brains & executor behind much of what Geo. took credit for. I have met him several times and I truly do not think the word "humble" is in his vocabulary!!

I have to thrust what I heard from Barris why would he lie
I went to a lunch where he spoke to two hundred people and told stories about sixty years in the auto field. I have no reason to doubt it and if it wasn't true half the crowd would of had the knowledge to call him on it. That is enough for me.Ummm, maybe for self promotion or public appearance financial gain??
Well maybe he did but I did just read on a quick Google search (in several places I might add) where George did get in trouble for taking credit that he said (--or insinuated) he built cars that he didn't.
No where can I find anyone other that George that states he built the original General Lee. The closest thing I read is he credits himself as 'making some modifications' to the General Lee. While it really doesn't matter I suppose, but by chance would you happen to have any information -or documentation that can corroborate/confirm he did indeed build/design the first General Lee??
