Metal top on 31 coupe

I went to look at a late 31 coupe for sale locally and it has a sheet metal roof. It didn't appear to have a seam where the oilcloth panel might have been.
I know some late CCPUs had metal roofs. Was this original on coupes too in 31?
 
There's a 31 coupe in town here with a metal top. It has been owned by the same guy for 43 years that i know of, he is very knowlegable about model A's and says it is original. He is in his 80's and has sold and repaired cars his whole life so ----

I seem to remember a thread about a metal insert that could be had from JCWitney, could it be something like that but welded?

I suppose it must be as it seems no coupes came with a metal top from the factory. But I can't imagine such a radical modification on this particular car.

It's been in the same family it's whole life (the seller is the son-in-law of the original owner) and has had no other mods,

From the outside I can't detect any waves or signs of a panel being welded in and I can't see it from inside because the original interior is still in it with the headliner.
 
With cars of this age trying to back track to what is original and what is not is very difficult unless you get that "Barn Find" that has been tucked away for 80 years. These cars were heavily modified and repaired with whatever was at hand. Cars were often pieced back together from 2 or more cars that were wrecked or disabled.
 
The plot thickens.

Upon further inspection and questioning the owner, the car has been in the same family since new. It was never modified in any way according to him (and it looks it).

The paint and striping is original.

If I wind up with it I'll pull the headliner out and take pics of the top from inside. Hopefully, someone with a ccpu with a metal top will have some to compare it to.

My coupe has a weld line below the quarter window and is leaded on the outer of the quarter panel, looks like two stampings. The weld is a strange one like a machine of some sort.
