3 Speed Warford Value?

A friend of mine that has been collecting T parts for several years and has restored a 27 pickup has an Aluminum cased 3 speed Warford he is considering selling. It seems to be in Great shape, what are these things selling for these days? I sold one of mine about 10 years ago for $250. I do not know if the market for these has gone up or down in that time so I can not advize him on a good round selling price. Any help with value would be appriciated. Thanks Rod

The new ones are selling for about $2750. Guess it all depends on the working order of the transmission and what somebody's willing to pay for it.

I have an early cast-iron Warford in my '20 T fairground racer, and it drives great in under and direct -- haven't built the nerve to drive the monster in over.

As nice as a new one is, I wouldn't trade the old one to get a new one.

I thought the old cast iron Warfords were only direct and under drive, but i don't know much about them, even though i have a couple units out in the barn. I got both of mine about 15 years ago. One was $25 (has a brazed spot on the iron case), and the other one was disassembled when got it (and still is). Isn't there a cone shaped bearing in the originals that is almost always bad, and isn't being reproduced? Can't help you, Rod, on aluminum Warford value, but if in working order with no bad bearing, should be highly desirable --- if I am wrong about overdrive in them, that is.

Southfork I can't officially say whether there's an overdrive yet, but I was told this one has overdrive, and there seems to be a place for it when the car is sitting still. The previous owner claims to have driven the car at 85mph once with plenty of throttle left. Will Ford-Hi/Warford-Direct/Ruckstell-Hi get you there?

I'm still shaking the car down in the yard, and it's already faster than I anticipated in Ford-Lo/Warford-Direct/Ruckstell-Hi.

He has a 2 spd Warford in his 26 pu. He had thought about changing over to this 3 spd, but decieded not to. He rarely drives much over 30 mph so really no need to change. I bought all of his Model A parts a couple of years ago. He has had to downsize some since he moved and lost his place to store his extra parts. I will be selling some parts for him on e-bay sometime this spring. I may have found a buyer for the transmission. Rod

I have a three speed Warford in my 26 T,over/under drive, best trans for going up any steep hills. You don't have to hold the pedal down in low gear.

Ford High is direct
Warford is direct and Ruxtell is standard direct or under drive. If the 3 speed warford has an OD (aluminum case) the ratios are like 1.5:1 - 1:1 - .80:1(OD) These are arbitrary numbers but give you an idea of the ratios.
Therefore in answer to your question, the ratios are 1:1 X 1:1 X 4:1 (11 tooth pinion) which is just about normal but noisier! DO NOT use an aux trans with out external aux rear brakes for the obvious reason! ws
