Floppy Handles:

The inside door handles and window crank handles are floopy on my 40.I purchased new pins from DC and they seem just a tad short.Of course the holes on my shafts are enlarged some also. Can I use a split pin and drill holes bigger? Can I use a small screw all the way through?Has anybody tackled this problem?I don't want to buy new handles and regulators. Thanks,Russell

To fix the outside floppy door handles on my 40 I had to replace the "S" springs inside the door latch mechanism. Had to remove inside door panel and take the latch apart, install springs and reassemble - including brazing the tabs on the latch.

you do not want to drill the holes out very much if at all. It will make the square regulator shaft weak and may lead to breaking. you could use drill rod to get a better fit, it comes in all the drill fractional letter and number sizes. the plastic plate under the handle and the spring under the plate should hold the handle and pin in place so even a loose pin will not fall out.

Is there suppose to be springs on 1940 doors?I don't have these, but my interior is not original either.

There are springs behind the door panel at both the latch handle and the window crank (handle).
Those springs may aid a bit in your quest to fix the your 'floppy' handles. However, the springs were designed to keep the door panel flush with the handle escutcheon, not to keep the handle from drooping.
I suspect the regulators are worn out.
New regulators are not that costly for closed cars and can be found frequently on ebay.

The inside handles is where I am having problems.
Carefully remove the interior door panel so you can see the entire regulator and latch and then you will be able to figure out what is causing you problems. I don't know of any shortcuts or quick and easy way to remedy this.
