what tire would you recommend 475x19 blackwall? i see prices for universal at 100 dollars and others at higher prices.would like to
pay as little as i can but dont want a junk tire.

do you recommend tubes with metal stems more $ over rubber stems
does it make that much difference?

listed in catouloge( model a tire flap for 38.75) is this needed and what is
it for?

fredski car is 1930 town sedan

I have a few Model As with metal stem tubes and one with separate, clamped in, A&L metal stems. The clamped in metal stems from A&L hold air best.

fredski,
I don't know if this helps, I put 19" Firestone Deluxe tires on Minerva and WITHOUT any balance weights she was TOTALLY smooth all the way up to 80 MPH! Yes, I said 80 MPH, with 3.78 gears & NO overdrive! That's right up to the "0" on the speedomometer! Braggin'? Yep! Bill W. (And I'm NOT a tire dealer.)

I put a set of Universal tires on my A awhile back. I was expecting to have to get them balanced, but I took it up to 60 and was still pretty smooth. I was pretty surprised, I figured it would vibrate something. I'm actually pretty pleased with them, I don't know how long they'll last in comparison to a more expensive tire, but they do get the job done.

I bought univerals blackwalls about 5 yrs ago then at $60. each.Seem OK only negitive is that they were made in Veitnam.........

sounds like a great tire.

do have your 4 banger motor balanced , is it still babbited/

and you might know what are tire flaps?

8o mph is awsome.

I have used firestone on my cars for many years, although I did use goodyear on a 31 tudor a few years ago. I just installed a set of Lester tires on my 29 tudor, and I am very pleased with them. The have a higher load rating then the firestone, but ride very smoothly, and are very quiet. They do not look like original patterns of the 1929 tires, but only the goodyear do, as the firestone has the pattern of the later 30's. My cars are not fine point cars, so the tread pattern does not matter to me, although the pattern on the Insa tires offends me. I skipped the Universals, as I am not real happy about having tires made in Vietnam.

Tire flaps are thick and taper off at the outer edge, and are generally used with truck tires and rims.

The model A's with welded spokes use rim liners, which are more like a giant rubber band.

Metal stems, like a good pinstripe, certainly give the car the finishing touch.

I too would look for tires made in America.

I am pleased with my Firestone tires on my huckster. But it kind of depends on what you want for your car. Do you want a driver or a show car? Do you drive it many miles per year? ETC. So a few decisions need to be made and then it seems like your choice from then on.

thanks all for your input on tires. will go for goodyear or firestones.

the 30 town sedan was bought by me in 1970 and sat inside until now
and im determined to have it running for spring.

i dont buy overseas stuff including any vehicles if i can help it .

Just installed Firestones. Replaced old stiff Montgomery Wards of unknown vintage. Had tread peel off one recently. The Firestones are about 1.5" taller and the car feels more 'lively' doing a lane change. Will take some getting used to. They do ride nice. Shocks are on my wish list next.

Firestone tires MAY be better than they used to be (including sizing) but my experience with the USA made Goodyear tires has been the best and I favor them strongly.

TudooR31,
Time to "BUTTER UP" Santa & give him/her the Part #'s! Bill W.

One disadvantage of the metal stems is that some modern digital pressure gauges won't fit in there between stem and rim. Found this out on a friend's car that had all new tires right before our last big outing.

I just finished restoring my 31 sport coupe tour car. It had new Insa tires on it when I got it. I don't especially like how they look but they ride fine and they were FREE. I'll wear them out and replace them with Goodyears

I have run the gambit on tires, over the years I started with Sears, and used other various brands. Currently we have Firestone white walls on one car, Goodyear whitewalls on the other and the roadster pick up has Excellsior 19" radial tires on it. I prefer the rubber stems, but do have metal stems on the Roadster Pick Up.

I have 6 A's and I have Goodyear on 3, Firestone on 2 and Lester on one. I don't drive over 45 miles an hour but I see no difference in any of them. The only difference I see is appearance and I do get comments from people that appreciate especially Good Years !
