Henry II's Model "A" 'Sportsman'...

Fordbarners, looking for more info and photos on the attached car that Henry Ford II used at his Southampton, LI home. It is a 1930 Model A with what looks like '40 wheels and '41 bumpers...and maybe a Roadster windshield frame??

The top was tan and the seats were red leather. Doesn't seem to have a trad cowl of any sort and the gas tank is in rear (see rear 3/4 shot).

It wasn't built until 1941. Word is Bob Gregorie designed it and that it was the inspiation for the later Ford/Merc Sportsman converts.

Please shoot me any more info you might have and/or reply to thread.

Apologies to Mr. Narus - forgot to credit his Crestline Woodies and Wagons book.

Thanks

There should be a plethora of information on the net about this car. The book "Edsel Ford & E.T. Gregorie" by Henry Dominguez has some first hand info on this car from Gregorie himself as to the building, the period when Gregorie owned it, etc etc.

The book can be hard to find and expensive when you do tho.

Thanks everybody for the info! JK - can you give me the name of the private collection?

Thanks again,
John B

It seems that I remember , Henry II last model A sportsman that was , maybe still is in an Alabama collection was offered up for sale a while back. I don't know if it sold or not. I may be wrong.

Purdy, it didn't sell and is still in Alabama.

Thanks Jamie, I didn't know. Being a one of a kind with history, its got to be worth a pretty penny.

It's hard to put a price on "history" Purdy...

Whenever I watch Antiques Roadshow, and they appraise some knick-knack at $50,000 or $100,000, I think to myself, "okay, now they just have to find that special someone willing to pay the price"...

Heck, most Duesenberg SJ's barely bring $1 million dollars...

I agree Frank. I know that its way out of my price range, even if I won the Publishers clearing house sweepstakes.

for that price[Sportsman] i'll have the Duesenberg and or a 745 Packard roadster... which the Packard does drive better then the Duesenberg.Sorry but the Sportsman is BUTT UGLY [
