A question about some 3X plugs

I bought some repro 3X plugs off of Craigslist to use as I continue to search for two more originals. I received them today and noticed that the 3's have round tops. Has anyone seen repros like this?

look at the knurling on the base
it dosnt go all the way to the bottom of the side
the knurling is also pushed in rather than out
the little points should stand out, rather than in
i dont know when this plug was made, but i believe it was an early repro
photos are of an original plug

May I stand corrected; You have an early 30s plug..By this I mean, The Core is a original & will pass all judging, The base part will NOT as per pictures shown..

I have a set of four 3-X that I believe are production also, but the 3 has a rounded top. Would it be possible to reproduce the bottom with the correct knurl? Can some-one tell me what the pitch is for the knurl around the base? Thanks. Don/WI

What you have are N.O.S. ORGINIAL plugs for the 1932 .I have 4 of them and the box states for the Model A + B .Came out in 1932.

same as those. I took the cores out and put them in the orginial 30/31 bottom base. Not for MARC/MARCA judging but for A.A.C.A.. works for me.

Here is another pic. Anyone ever try the bases Snyder's sells? If so how do they look?

Generally the EARLY boxes have a date code on one of the lower flaps. I don't know when the bright red lettering was first produced. I have a couple as well. I thought the 1932 plugs still had the orange lettering but I could be mistaken. Yes, currently the red would likely be accepted in judging.

I should add that the modern version has a different shape to the porcelain insulator. The modern version has a straight taper below the ribs.

Yes they are all 3X plugs. The 3 on the left are 30-31, the 4th from the left is a 28-29 and the one on the right is a 30-31. The one on the right has wrench marks on the base and lock ring but the porcelain is good. The Ebay ad said "All appear to be well used. Should be considered for reconditioning or collectible only." I have started to clean them up. Here is a picture of two of the porcelains. Can you tell which one I have cleaned up?

What did you use that did not take color off?

Mike,

By color are you referring to the lettering? The lettering on these is part of the porcelain and does not come off easily. To clean them I first used a small sharp knife to scrape off most of the carbon deposits. I then used fine steel wool to remove the remaining deposits. Finally I removed most of the brown staining using a green scrub pad and an abrasive house hold cleanser. With additional cleaning I thing I can make them look almost new, except for the electrode.

While we are showing old plugs, I'll show you my collection of well used Model "A" plugs.
I have one photo of '28-'29 plugs and a photo of '30-'31 plugs.
MIKE :)

custom53 ................
I could not tell you, but it would take a bit of labor to restore them properly. Also it might take extra plugs to get all good parts. Ones made to look NOS, would probably be expensive.
MIKE :)

That is a very hard ?? to answer !!.. 28/ thru early 30 or late 30/31 ? Show or Go ??.. I have a NOS set of the very early 28 style & the same, NOS, for the later 28/thru early 30.. It all depends on the buyer & the seller...I have sold NOS sets for over $400.00..
