What is wrong with this picture

So much to know and so little time and money. THE COIL IS HORIZONTAL. Got the vehicle running and driving along it suddenly stopped. Called AAA and the driver looked and said the coil should be mounted vertically up. Oil in the coil will not cover properly and the coil will burn up. Got towed home and bought a new coil and changed the mounting as suggested. Runs fine again.

Far-fetched, and admittedly POSSIBLE, but so are many things in life. I think the tow truck driver just wanted YOU to think that he was smart enough that he didn't HAVE to drive a tow truck if he didn't want to. DD

Nice engine.Early Mustang 289 etc fords the coil was mounted horizontally from the factory. The bracket is as such.

Food for thought I guess. The one in mine is horizonal. It has been that way 4 years. Is there any info with your new coil about mounting position?

On my '32 with MSD ignition and coil I once tried to mount the coil vertical down and oil started to run out. Did mount it vertical up then.

Hey Roger, I think it would look better mounted vertical. Very nice looking Flathead you got. Ken

Actually a old wifes tale !
Oil will only run out of a "defective " coil , many coils have ran upside down and sideways for years.
A oil filled coil is filled with the correct amount of oil and vacuum packed at the factory , if the seals are good no oil will leak out !

Ignorance is a terrible affliction.....have had it many times. Now I wonder about the original new coil that quit on me. Or so it seems. Thanks for all the imput.

Was that new coil Chinese by any chance? I bought a new NAPA coil for my Cub Cadet garden tractor and in 2 days had no spark again!NAPA won't replace defective electrical parts.Pulled a coil off another tractor that was atleast 20 years old and it fured right up and is still running fine.Coils can mount in any position VW coils mounted upside down on the fan shroud
