Model A News/The Restorer collections....

Today I looked at my collection of Model A News (MARC) and The Restorer (MAFCA). I am only minus a few issues so you can amigine just how many I have.

I am sure there are a lot of you out there that have somewhat the same collection.

I had to ask myself just what am I going to do with all these issues...when was the last time I looked at one of the past issues after I had read it from cover to cover. Kind of mind boggling.

I asked myself is it just the fact that I am in this hobby that I have to keep all of these...just what is the facination?

Granted I look up past articles and that is about the only reason I keep them.

What is your reason to hang on to such a collection of magizines such as these if you are in the same Model A/AA I am?

And no Deluxe Delivery Don (my Brother)...These are not going to the dump!!!!!!

I give mine away when finished reading them. Some end up on the tables at work, some go to friends, some live in the bookstands at the coffee shop, etc.

Hello Steve, Why don't you tell the Model A World what you did throw away.????? Just having some fun .

I think I have about 400 pounds of Restorer magazines too!

Every once in a while I wonder what I should do with them and then I look through some old issues and it's like reading them for the first time. Next they go back in the dungeon...

So, what did you throw away Pluck?????

Got in the habit of copying the important info in them and slipping the copies into the appropriate sections of the JS's. I refer to the JS's often and then if Doc Kalinka or someone has given good info on something I have it in that section. Yeah the MARC & MAFCA magazines after 25 or more years do take up shelf space. Don't really refer back to all the advertising or past Nationals info ever.

My wife calls me a paper *****! My restorer and man collections are almost complete, but I also hoard back issues of random club newsletters, special interest groups, rosters, etc. I rotate re reading issues by slipcover, could never part with any of them, endless information and pictures.

Like Pluck, I have all of the Restorers and Model A News, except for 4 or 5 issues of each, and some extras. When I got bit by the Model A bug I started collecting every thing related to the Model A, Restorers, Model A News, Beam bottles, Hubley's, books, limited edition art prints, etc. For me the more you know about your hobby the more you enjoy it. Model A magazines are like collecting anything, the thrill is in the hunt to eventually get a full set. I like to go back and look at the cover art and photographs in the magazines when I have extra time. I do have a weak moment from time to time and think I need to get rid of all of those old magazines but I think I will keep my collection for a few more years!

Hey Pluck, if you are really wanting to get rid of that pile of magazines why not talk to the MAFFI people about a donation to the new Model A museum? The Model A magazines are exactly what a museum needs to show the history of collecting Model A's since the 1950's.

They do take up alot of room! I have full collections of Model A News & Restorer in addition to complete sets of other Ford club magazines. They go with my 2000+ volume Ford book collection.

I like thumbing thru them once in a while and seeing the changes, for instance what passed as best of show in 1956 wouldn't garnish a third place at today's show, etc etc. I highly doubt I will ever get rid of them, one of my kids will likely take the collections on when I die.

Just when you think you won't need them a question comes up. I recently wanted a factory photo of a glass sediment bulb. Started at my first issue and eventually found two pictures, one great one. Not something where an index helps much. So I have to keep storing them but 50 years times 12 is something of a hassle. Bob Johnson's hope to put them on CD/DVD does have merit.

I have a full set from 1962 on and several extra copies. I do refer to them periodically and every time I find something new. I am currently doing a project for MARC scanning and enhancing the news letters from Vol 1 issue 1 (May 1953) to when the Model A News started in 1965. Those very old issues have some really interesting information and stories.
