Noisy mercury rear end

You guys are really confusing me. '49 thru '56 Mercury's came with Dana 44's and no center section that can be removed from the front. The Mercury's refered too in this section that had front loading rear axles, must have had an axle assembly swap along the way somewhere. Don't know why, because the Dana 44 is a stronger axle, unless they were swapping in a Ford 9 inch rear axle.

My original 53 Mercury convertible came with a center section that came out the front! It had a 3:31 ratio with the MercOmatic.

Only 49,50,51 Mercury's and wagons had a dana 44 rear. 52 thru 56 Mercury cars had the drop out center section like Ford cars from 49 thru 56.

I beleive that '49 thru '51 Mercury's and Wagons came with a Dana 44, but there is no way 1955 and 1956 Mercury's and wagons came with the same front loading rear axle as Ford passenger cars did.

I would just like to clarify that 55 & 56 T Birds used Dana 46 rears.

Similar to the 44s but with differences in bearing and axle sizes, Not as strong as the 44.

Don't know what they used in the Mercs however.

Oldmics,

Not to high jack an old thread, but:

Interesting comment. Both my 'birds used Dana 44 gear sets. But the old one,in the 60's, got a 6 cyl O/D station wagon rear end (4:27). Axles were larger, IIRC. The current 'bird, 4:11's, appeared stock, but the spring perch welds were sloppy. When I went to do the bearings, it had truck axles, larger, need a different bearing. I just assumed the whole rear axle was changed over the years. The 4:11's were pretty common in trucks, so a simple wrecking yard change.

Don't remember the brakes being different.

Are you saying the "46" was the small axle/bearing rear, but still used the 44 gear set? Not here to argue, just to learn.

Bossy...if your ride is your 56 station wagon avatar then you have one heck of a great looking car...great color combo and that visor sets if off beautifully.

I still have not figured out all of the differences between the 44 and 46 rears.

Both did use the same ring and pinion but I"m not sure about the carrier assembly.

I would assume the carrier is different due to the differences in axle size.

The wagons and police vehicles got the heavy duty 44 assembly.

Not sure what rear assembly a regular Ford passenger car recieved. It could have been engine power plant designated.
No sense in putting a 44 behind a 6 cylinder unless it was ordered that way.

Like I said I dont know what the Mercs recieved.

The Mercs being an "upscale" vehicle with a V8 may have gotten the heavier duty 44 assembly.

Since the Birds were built as a "personal luxury car" they were not supposed to see heavy duty use.
Ford chose to use a somewhat less expensive rear assembly to maintain a greater profit margin since they were already loosing their *** on every T Bird built.

Believe me the Birds are still something I am learning about every day.
Ask me about then nose panel differences thruout the 3 years that I am currently attempting to figure out.
