Jump in tire prices ?

I admit, sometimes I feel as though I live under a rock, but I just checked tire prices at Universal Tire's site, and their least expensive Model A tire (4.50-4.75 x 21 BW) is now running $99 + S&H ?

Seems like last time I checked (last year?), they were around $70 ?

Has there been an "across-the-board" increase in tire prices opver the last year or two? ( Similar to the jump in battery prices a few years back ?)

Thanks...

i have not checked , but i would say yes because everything else keeps going up .

While I'm sure manufacturers are padding the increased costs to their benefit one factor in higher tire prices is the cost of oil. Crude goes up and it effects us in many ways.

(sigh)... now I remember Pluck posting about that... :(

Looks like the cheapest 21" tire is $99 now...

Well, I guess that's that.

Thanks for the replies.

Coker put out an email last year urging people to buy tires before an anticipated price increase. In addition to those "greedy" tire manufacturers lining their pockets, the price of oil has been at an all time high, effecting raw materials as well as transportation costs. And don't forget the cost to administrate tire registration required by the government. My lament is the disappearance of quality intertubes made in this country.

The price of tires is tied directly to the price of oil. Anytime oil goes up, tires will also go up. Also, the excise tax is a percentage of the price, Higher price, higher excise tax. Also the sales tax, same thing.
This is called inflation You pay more money, but get the same or less in some cases than you did last week.
Why? Cause the powers that be are causing more money to be printed to pay it's debts. That's called monetarizing the debt.

Call it what you want, but it all boils down to Terry's comment. The dollar is rapidly falling in value as presses continue to print more money.

Not sure the price of oil should have an effect on the price of tires that have already been manufactured, and are sitting on the shelf...

I guess they are a "commodity", just like oil, gold, corn....

Feh.

On 9-12-09 the administration placed a teriff on tires imported from china.
The teriff was 35% the first year, 30% the second year, and 25% the third year. Do you supose this could have an effect on tire prices? Google tire teriff for more information.

OK, but those inexpensive tires from Lucas are made in Vietnam.

Remember when Pluck mentioned this a year ago and a few laughed....
ain't so funny now.

" a 20. dollar bill is now the new 5."

I was told by a GOODYEAR DEALER who i bought 4 tires from for my F250 [$1000.00] not mounted or balance that the price went up because Obama wanted to make the playing field fair so tires coming into the U.S. WERE 35% TAXED. So as the GOODYEAR DEALER said to me that they got greedy[here] and gave them a chance to raise their tires made here and make more money at a 30% raise and still be cheaper then what is coming in.

It's called inflation. Many prices held firm from 2009-mid 2011 to help with the economic hardships of many people. Then in mid 2011 the merchants couldn't hold the line any more and the floodgates opened.

:mad:I still feel like it's just greed...A good friend went shopping for tires for his motor cycle, just in a couple of months one tire went up $16, the dealer told him it was the corn prices going up, I guess if we get a early frost they will go up again.:o
