Re-Engineered Door Hinges

Did you destroy the hinge on the door also? I would try Bert's for original replacements also. If you don't come up with them. Get back to me directly at resdns@comcast.net and I will see what I have. Replacing the riveted ones on the doors is a task and 1/2!

I've never worked on the door hinges and rivets, but they don't look like fun. I saw a mint pair of 29 Tudor doors 3 years ago at a swap meet, but I didn't buy them just because someone foolishly torched the hinges.

I guess someone should make door hinge rivets that actually have nuts inside the door, sort of like the headlight rivet/nuts.

The part on the door isn't completely destroyed, but I had to drill the pins out and the holes are now oversized and probably not exactly in the center.
I could probably puddle weld the holes and re-drill, but I don't know if I could ever get the right alignment.

Go right to bluechipengineering .com, they do Model A hinges and do an excellent job on them, they are pricey but they are flawless, I have them on my 30 sedan

Yeah, they sure are expensive.
I didn't mention this, but I would also need to buy the mounting kit.

I really don't want to spend this much, but I'm at the point now where I'm so frustrated with the hinge pins, that I may need to do it just to keep my sanity and get past this step.

I'm going to contact BlueChipEng and see what they say.

Tommy-

Aren't oversized pins sold for holes too large?
If not, you could always make your own.

berts has no used ones for sale . i just talked to them . really hard to find good used ones . a friend & i have been looking for sometime now . he is buying a set of those now . the bronze ones wont take paint . it is what it is !

I can't get the pins out of the center piece of the hinge. I've tried the 2-bar hinge pin removal tool, big hammers, heat, soaked them penetrating oil for over a month, and nothing seems to work. Then I tried all those methods at once and still nothing. I actually think that by beating on them, I probably expanded them more in the hole. Almost like riveting them in.

Maybe I'll take one more shot at removing the pins, but I just seem to damage them a little more every time I try.:(

It;s best to carefully drill down through the pins about 3/4 of the way, then use a punch to drive them out. This way everything behind the drilled hole will be pulled to a smaller diameter, rather than pushed to a larger diameter. It's tricky, but can be done if enough care is used.

I'll try this method on them, but the last time I drilled down the middle with a small 1/8 drill, I snapped the drill bit, and it's still in there.

I didn't expect this to be such a problem.

I believe the pins have a knurl under the head so if you are trying to drive them
down through the hinge you are going to have more problems than driving them
up from the bottom.
