flathead question

I picked up this a while ago. Was told it came out of a 38 truck. I think it is a 39 mercury. What do the Flathead fathers think? I have more pictures in my albums. Almost no ring ridge on viable cracks yet. One piston is marked 0.05 cam is marked 5 t Pistons are domed. I was going to put this in the 32 pick up i,m building but i might want to save it for my 40 coupe. I also have a 46/48 59 motor i can use in the pick up. What are your thoughts.

Hi George

I think it's a matter of personal preference....whether U want to cruise or get flat-out horsepower...if it were me I would use the 59ab in the pickup and build a 49-53 hot flathead for the 40 coupe...I had a 59ab in my 40 coupe and just wasn't powerful enough for me ...it depends on your finances because you could easily spend 4-6k around here to build the early engine.....gump

Well for more hp for the coupe i have almost finished building a 1954/331 hemi. While i'm still a youngster(63) The reason i might put the 38/9 motor in the forty is if someday i may want it to look more original.
Thanks for your input. I think i will be taking the 59ab apart after i really looked this one over. I,m leaning more and more to going that way with the pick up

Engine shown seems to be a 1939-1940 239 engine, merc or truck.

Thank you Bruce
That's what i thought(and was hoping). The block also has 99 stamped in the right front and the round center water hole. The Heads have the part# cast into them and i thought it was a 38 only head. They also have a T cast into them Does that stand for truck? I have the chance to pick up another one cheap.
Thanks again
George

The 255 CID was introduced with the Mercury cars in the 1949 model year. Other than the 4 inch crank and the lower compression ratio 8CM heads, it's pretty much the same as the rest of the 8BA family. 95 HP & 100 HP V8s were 239 from 39 thru 48. That's where the 99 came from (1939 and 239).
