tomorrow I plan to paint the bottom side of the trunk lid on a '40 coupe. it is removed and all hardware has been removed. it is laying bottom side up on the work table. I placed masking paper inside and behind the circle cut outs.

the tar paper behind the triangles are too tight to work masking paper between it and the steel trunk lid.

what kind of masking tape do you recommend for the triangles? I suppose some kinds of tape would leak paint and other tapes would deface the surface of the tar paper.

I'm thanking you now for the good help.

If it matters... when your car was built the waffle insulation was painted right along with the trunk lid. There was absolutely NO effort to mask the insulation materiel. Over the years much of the paint was absorbed into the material. So, if you happen upon a very well maintained
(authentic / original) '40, the paper may appear to be black and / or unpainted.
