1952 F1 steering adjustment

The shop manual says 1 - 2 lbs on the sector/worm mesh.

That's with all connections removed including drag link, lock nut under the steering wheel and even the tube to dash bracket loosened.

In my opinion, too much preload is a reason these boxes fail... I do as you suggest, just take out ALL of the slack- while steering is centered...

I suspect the same or excessive lash letting the sector roller hammer the worm. I've got 4 or 5 of these boxes and seen several others. Most have worm gears that look chipped, not worn, at the center (high point of the worm). Not what you would expect from lack of lube or extreme wear, corrosion, etc. The sector rollers almost always look OK.

The preload is for the two tapered roller bearings. It's ajusted with shims till a drag is noticeable.

The shop manual also describes the preload for the bearings on the worm gear - about 1/2 to 1 lb - which is adjusted with the shims.

When I rebuilt mine, the worm gear looked just like that. In addition, my sector needle bearings were toast.

I agree that most of these boxes/gears were destroyed by guys tightening the adjuster when the steering started to get loose - actually due to worn ball joints, draglink connections, kingpins, etc

A good bit of the Gemmer II boxes I've opened up had divots in the center of the worm. Most have good sectors but a few need a new roller. Luckily, most all Gemmer roller sector type boxes have the exact same worm gear. It's a bear to get them swapped off the shaft but at least they can be repaired to like new condition.
