The '53 Merc (all '52-'53 Ford and Merc) pans have ribbed center sumps that hold 4 quarts, while the '49-'51 Merc rear sump pans hold 5 quarts, plus one for a filter for each. Pan shape and application determine capacity, not the block, so what pan does your "'53 Merc" have?
