Sent my cover to Flop to fix the swiss cheese holes. Looks great! Debating if I want to bondo over the deep rust pits, or just paint over them.

Live in harmony with the signs of age. Paint it as it is. Flop fixed the holes, the pits won't develop into holes now the car is being looked after.

Unless you decide to restore the whole car of course.

If you had the whole car at home you wouldn't be worrying over the minor details.

Well that is another story..... do to staffing issues at work I am not going to make Georgia. Looks like the first "showing" will be a Hemmings cruisin July 13th. We will be in Vermont at a horse show all that week.

Mart,
Since I am bolting the cover to my new floorboards from Roy, I want the finish to be nice. If I was bolting it to the old floor boards I'd paint flat rustoleum over it just to prevent rust and let it go.

Jim, Since you have the better than perfect floorboards from Roy, why not take an extra hour to fill- sand - hi build prime and paint the trans cover. Three reasons for this, one is you will sleep better, two, 32 trans covers are very hard to come by and it deserves a good finish, third, when friends want to see Roy's new floorboards, you will be able to pull back the mat and say "see".
Just an opinion, others will disagree.

some pretty deep pits. what is best primer to fill them in?

Personally I wouldn't trust bondo on a peice going on the floor. Unless you are never going to ever touch it with your feet. I was taught at the body shop I worked for to never use bondo on anything with with general contact possibilties.

It really depends on how deep they are. Using filler primer just coat it several times and sand it down until you can't see the pits anymore. Another thing I've heard of guys doing is using a skim coat of JB Weld to fill in the imperfections on areaa that would be subject to heating and cooling like your cover.

Bummer!!

Jim,

Looks like flop did a nice job! I would go with the JB weld. I have not used it, but have heard good things about it. I have used primer to fill pits, and depending on how deep they are, it may take many coats and sanding.

Keep 4-banging!
