Hood Center hinge and Painting

I painted my 29 last year. I have had a persistant problem with the paint chipping in the hinge area. I have had to repaint the hood several times.
I took a grinder and opened the gap between the tubes of the hinge. Thinking the hinge may be binding or rubbing the paint causing it to chip.

Anybody else had this problem paint the center hinge?

I use wood dowels for hinge pins, just dab the ends with hood color, soak them in linseed oil & install. Seems to help and they never RUST or SQUEEK! Bill W.

Don't let primer/surfacer build up on the edges of the hinge area. On mine, I sanded that area almost down to the metal, and then gave the entire hood a coat of epoxy for a sealer, and then the finish coat.

I got only one scratch in the hinge area, and that was from the head of the screw that holds town the cowl welting. I had not screwed it in quite far enough to clear the hood...

That's funny Doug, because I just scratched my hood hinge the same way about a half hour ago. My fix was to slightly shim the rod retainer up a tad. Still a bummer about my scratch.

When I get around to repainting I have been thinking about using stone/chip guard on the hinge.. That'll probably look awful but it still might look better than the chips..

After filing down each hinge part to allow for paint I placed a VERY SMALL brass washer at each end inbetween the hood sections. I fit then removed the washer and filed it down to an extreemly small size the re installed....NO MORE CHIPPING !!! Most people do not see it...

hood shelfs will help stop the chipping . by not going fully over , it helps alot . i use s/s rods & letter chip !
thin paint around the hinge area's will also help .............. steve

Does it help with preventing paint chips?
I had no chipping, but I don't really know if it was because of the dowels??? Maybe with the oiled dowels it is more cushiony and forgiving to the painted hinge edges??? Bill W.
( As they say, "I don't know, I jest work here!:p )

A thought to ponder...

For those of us who have looked at all-original vehicles, we notice that the paint on the hood is often discolored (due to engine heat) but not "chipped". So if they chip now but did not back then, "what" is the difference between then and now?? IMHO it was Steve that stated the answer above.

And here I sit preparing to tackle the chipped hinges on our Tudor! She's going to do bride transportation duty in June and needs to look her best.

Thanks for yet another timely thread, guys.
