37 Zephyr Identification help please...

I have a 37 Zephyr that at one time in its history had a v8 installed in place of the v12. The ****** that is in it I'm guessing is original but not certain. Is there anything on a 37 Zeph that identifies it as to what it is? A few pics if that helps at all? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The flat part above the inspection plate on the transmission should have matching number to the one on the frame (VIN) if it is original to the car. Cecil B. (on the FordBarn) has a '37 LZ Coupe so he may be able to provide additional information.

Transmission case looks like a Model A. The trans case has a blank space above the inspection cover and has a serial number stamped into it. If it is a Lincoln case the number should start with an H

The Y in the prefix should indicate something different that a passenger car with a G type 6 cylinder. It may have come from a truck that had a 6 cylinder but I don't know for sure.

That bell sure looks like the six cyl bell. The serial number you found is confusing. The 1GY prefix suggests 1941 G series six vehicle (probably truck from the "Y"). The remaining sequential number falls into the 1942 range, so it's a bit confusing.

I rather doubt that this trans came with ANY Lincoln/Zephyr car....the bell housing on the front sure looks like the six cyl type, and we know the LZ cars did not have a six cyl engine. The shifter tower looks 1936-38. The rear support kind of looks like a Lincoln piece but it's hard to see.

This trans is NOT going to fit to any flathead V8 engine (or any Lincoln V12 as far as I know). The gears (unless changed out years ago to something newer) will be pre '39 gears, so it's probably not a candidate as a donor for its guts into the proper V8 trans gearbox.

That is the correct ream mount for the Lincoln Zephyr transmission, at least up to '39.

Pulled off the top and found all Spiral gears, 3" shift fork and a 28 tooth cluster. Bruce Landcaster has me pointed in the right direction with a few of his tech posts on the Hamb. Thanks for all the help here guys. A bit disappointing but its all good. Other than really nasty gear lube and a little surface rust the gears look in good shape.

Whooo! Not just a Zephyr but a coupe!
Are there any funny things going on around where front of engine was?? I'm curious as to what exactly was in front of the trans!

It looks phunny because the grill is out. The transmission is a 6 cyl and as far as I know it will not bolt up to a V8 or V12 so Im wondering if someone put a 6 cyl in there in place of the V12.

Find a V8 case and the gears will interchange.

Oh yeah, I'll show ya but it aint pretty and don't get sick! I just presumed some one yanked the 12 out and stuffed a flathead 8 in its place but I think you guys are right. Who ever had it hacked out the trunk area and made it a pick up truck guessing for gas ration tickets. Im putting it back to a real car.

The fenders are all worked out now and the grill and hood are really straight now so I just need to keep moving on it. The passsanger door was hit with a couple shot gun blasts as well as a few what looked like mortar rounds. LOL time and patients, time and patients!

Yep those are 6 cyl mounts . Im glad you are saving this car ,its a miricle the trunk lid is there, impossible to find.

This was drug out of the desert fields of Oklahoma. It appears to have been through a couple fires. Some of the lead is gone some isnt. Of course someone tap danced on the roof a couple of times. The up side is that this metal is soooo thick it doesn't move very easy. Lots of hammer dolly work and some heat shrinks here and there. I found a 37 lid in my junk and used the peak out of the center to fill in the peak between the deck lid and the rear windows... Perfect match! So we have our little victory's here and there.
