New Guy (sort of) Intro

Hey all,

I'm from Southeastern WI- 39 years old. I was finally able to get my first old car 3 years ago, a '53 Customline 4dr. Bought it up in western Minnesota from a farmer who was selling the homestead.

Really solid with really nice original interior, just turned 68K on the 239 this past summer. She's a stocker with the exception of the front end lowered with Aerostar springs. I have plans to make it a mild custom by getting it nosed and decked, and shaving the doorhandles. Although she drives like a dream now, I would like to switch her over to 12V so I feel confident taking some fairly long hauls.

I'm on the HAMB a lot and am a member of the 52-56 Ford Owner's Social Group. I joined here a couple of years ago but haven't been around much- just did my first post today and figured I oughta do an intro. Just spent the last few hours looking around- I think I'm gonna be spending a lot more time here :D

Welcome and hope you find what you're looking for here.

As far as switching to 12 volt so you can "feel confident taking some fairly long hauls", keep in mind the millions of people and millions of cars that drove 'cross country for 30-40 years on 6 volt systems with plenty of confidence. You may have seen my stories of my totally stock (6 volt) '47 Fordor taking the long hauls to Route 66, Pike's Peak, and Death Valley with no problems caused by the 6 volt electrical system. Personally I don't find 6 volts inferior in any way unless you're wanting to customize with a lot of electrical whistles and bells that only work on 12 volts.

Again, welcome to the Barn. Glad to have you aboard. :)

Welcome. I agree with Old Henry, leave it 6V. I like to drive my vehicles, and they have all been left with 6V, I drove my 39 Mercury Coupe cross country, Georgia to Iowa with no problems. To Canada on a couple of occasions. No problems. One trip straight through from Dearborn, MI to Atlanta, GA, 800 miles, i8 hours. Of coursse that was several years ago. I would not think of doing it now at age 80.

there is nothing wrong with 6v as long as all the grounds are very clean and there are plenty of them, but i like 12 for the simple reason 12v parts are easy to find in any parts store , including all light bulbs, and since you are going to 12v forget the generator and install a chevy 3 wire alt, do that and you can eliminate the regulator, alts are cheap and easy to instal by making a simple bracket, and once again any parts store will carry them, sorry to all you guys who like to keep things original, but convience in fixing and finding parts comes first for me

Welcome dude! You can learn hell of alot from these guys on here. Just ask a question, it will be answered! Haha! But, ive learned alot from these guys, and you will too! What have you done with the car yet?

x2 ford1. while it is a personal preference to upgrade to 12V, you only do it once. after that many things are easier. things like a bad bulb are available everywhere. then you also have the advantage of being able to add things like modern tunes, GPS systems, cell phone chargers, etc. it's your choice...welcome aboard...jack

Skoh,
Welcome aboard! Good looking `53! I am changing my `51 F1 back to 6 Volts after I get the six changed out to a rebuilt 239.
