Why does my charging rate keep increasing?

I set my charging rate at 10 amps a couple weeks ago. Yesterday when I took the coupe out it was charging at about 20 amps (or more, but that's the peg). I turned the parking lights on and it went back to zero, and -10 at idle, as per usual. Is it possible my brushes are slipping, and if so, can they be tightened? Or is it something else? The repro ammeter, maybe? I'm a fair mechanic, but I don't understand electrical. (And it seems the longer I own these cars the less I know!)

I've never heard of an adjustble brush ring turning on it's own, as they are usually very tight from the 2 spring loaded clips screwed to the end plate.

You might have a battery going bad, or a bad connection in the charging circuit. Repro ammeters are always suspect, but usually are OK. I have never had a problem with a restored original ammeter.

Tom, I've never known generator brushes to get loose either, but these things are getting old, so... But really, I think you're on the mark with your suggestion of connections in the circuit. I've only had this car a short while and haven't gone through everything yet. It's cold in the garage!

I have an original ammeter I'll install also.

Thanks your for suggestions.
