Piston rings

I'm assembling my engine with new pistons and Hastings rings. Ring installation instructions are sort of generic and leave me with a question. Their website doesn't positively answer it. One ring has a bevel on the inside edge with a dimple on the opposite side. The other ring is a simple square edged one with no bevel or dimple. I know dimples go up. I know bevels generally go up on a top ring and down on a second ring.

My question is which ring is the top one for this set, beveled or the plain square one?

Thanks,

Ray

Tom, you're most likely correct. The link you furnished clearly shows the ring as a reverse torsional taper face being for second ring use. The instruction sheet with my rings shows simply as one of the compression ring types without mentioning which groove it goes in.

Thanks for the quick reply. Allows me to put the pistons in yet tonight.

I just reringed a engine yesterday, with Hasting rings. They are marked in the box. Top and second rings. The top ring was square and the second had the beveled edge. The second ring had the dot, which directions clearly state. Dot up.

fordfixer is correct. The box should have had a sheet inside that states how the rings are oriented. The flaps on the box tell which ring is 1st and second.

I somehow allowed my rings to get mixed in the box and the instruction sheet doesn't state which of the styles shown is the top one and which is the second. Maybe one of the other two languages is more clear.

You guys have made it absolutely clear and I'm sure glad this forum exists.

Thanks,

Ray

I would say the plain ring goes on top.
Sometimes the instruction sheet seems to contradict itself. I've seen where they say the dot goes up and also where they say the bevel goes up, but then have the dot on one side and the bevel on the other side.
See if this site helps:

Tom's right, Plain ring top, Dot up on the second ring, Third, either way. After you put one set on, it becomes easy to tell.
