How do I identify the engine size? Re-building and trying to buy parts, after receiving the wrong Oil Pan ordered for what I thought was a 351W, I was incorrect. I am now thinking it may be a 292 or 312. HELP! How do I find the correct information?

How do you determine the engine size? I do not know if it is a 292 or 312 , was sure it was a 351w, but parts ordered were wrong. Does Anyone know what I can do to get correct Engine size?

If the car has the original engine in it, the code should be on the VIN tag. Have you got a picture of the engine? If so, post it here maybe someone can at least ID the engine family it belongs to - small block, Yblock, FE, etc.

If you find the engine code, post it here and I or someone can decipher it for you.

351Ws weren't original to the '59s, they were intro'd in '69s

The vin will have a letter in the first position of the sequence. C is 292 Y-block, X is 352 FE series. I do not believe the 312 was offered (or even produced for that matter), the FE series started life as a 332, 352 and later on larger displacements were offered. Not sure what the code was for the three different HP versions of the 352, just know X was one of them.

[First question-------Is the distributor in the front or the back of the engine?/QUOTE]
I'm with you Paul. If the distributor is in the back passenger side of the block, with upswept exhaust manifolds, it is a Y block. If it is original, it will be a 292.
If it looks like this it is a 332/352.

Engine codes on the the vin plate are:- A or C is 292, B or G is 332, H is 352.
If the engine doesn't match any of this data it could be anything and we'll need photos to identify.

y blocks (original to a 59 ford) have a centerbolt type valve cover. no outer perimeter fastners . 289, 302 351 etc. windsor motors have perimeter fastners on valve cover, 3 on exhaust man. side and one on top if I remember right. fe motors 332, 352, 390 etc have a water pump like a chevy, they have 4 bolts . only the yblock and the fe would be originally installed in your car. sorry weather is bad and I am up in the house. I have at least one of each of these motors down in the garage so I am going by memory. if this doesn't help, look for a casting # on the intake manifold if it starts with a b it is for decade of the 50's c is 60s d 70's and so on . this will help possibly eliminate a motor or 2. if you could post a good picture we could for sure tell you what family of engine it is.

ALSO forgot to tell you a 289 302 260 etc. use basically same oil pan in a car 70's and back , a 351w looks the same but I am pretty sure it is wider.

If its the stock engine, its either a 292 or a 332/352.

If the distributor is in the back, its a 292 YBlock. f the distributor is in the front, its a 332/352 FE engine.

If its not a stock engine, we need a picture.
