Ok that's it.

Ok that does it. I'm done trying to be environmentally aware. I've got parts that need to be clean and soaps like Simple Green and some of this other stuff ain't doin' it. So i'm going to mix a concoction of gasoline, diesel, lighter fluid, lacquer thinner, denatured alcohol, paint thinner, paint stripper and white phosphorus and see if it will cut the grease. And I don't want anyone giving me a lot of lip service about the environment. And besides when I'm done I'll dump the whole works in the creek down below the house and nobody will ever know.
Or I'll try denatured alcohol and when I'm done I'll take it to a dump site for oil and other chemical and dump it in there.

Those enviromental laws are going to be our downfall. Already run lots of manufacturing overseas. I am a retired cropduster and a few years ago EPA came out for an inspection of our place. Results came back with DDT contamination. We had never used DDT there. DDT had been banned some 30 years before. Before we were at that location there was nothing there that used chemicals. We were in BIG trouble because it was on our property and was responsible regardless who put it there. Lots of time and money spent that did no good. Finally we decided to have, at our expense, test run and they came up no trace of DDT. They finally came out run another test and there was none. All they said was "sorry". Cost us a lot of money and time not to mention how much it cost EPA. Talk about expense, they came from 180 miles south of us. What they did was caught a plane flew to city 100 miles north of us and drove to our place in a rented car. All that on our Tax dollar and it took longer than if they had just drove the 180 miles to begin with.
I know several operations that went out of business and file bankruptcy because they didn't have money to challenge charges.

Take the direct approach and put the stuff on the woodburner as an "accelerant". The object is to leave a clear and sharp carbon footprint eh? At the power plant we couldnt dispose of waste oil in an ordinary fashion of having the regular hauler pick it up because it had "chlorine salts" in it from chlorinated solvents we used. Stuff with tri-chlorethane III like brake cleaners use(d). So we had to use special marked drums so that the land fill people knew how to put it back in the ground with the regular oil. No doubt the bagged and tagged asbestos went in on top of that. Thats probably got a lettuce crop growing on it today. What a joke. ws

If you got a "sorry" out of the government, you got more than most people. The government never wants to admit, it made a mistake.
MIKE :)

I've been hearing mineral spirits is the thing to use.

Oh, i didn't really dump the concoction in the creek. Seems like you can't mix that damn Willie Peter (white phosphorus) with anything without starting a fire.

Good ol' kerosene and a wire tooth brush in the parts washer. Degrease, let dry and wire wheel the reisidue off, wash again, dry, and paint. Period. ws

I live on a lake and even though I'm not an environmentalist I don't want it ruined. So I use degreasers, collect what's left and take it to the local collection site. Kerosene works well too. Not sure what you're trying to clean, but degreaser plus a little soak time works well for my nastiest car stuff.

I got "invited" to a guys house who did this, with a bunch of my friends. We brought big red trucks and extinguished what was left with 2-1/2" lines and water we drafted from the creek. Carbon footprint? Oh yeah, he left one.

I commend you 46! Fire guys, soldiers, and some cops even, are true heroes! Everything I clean is in a parts washer, and if ANY welding, cutting or grinding gets done I always do 2-3 fire checks during the evening after work. Im even good about piles of oily rags with spontaneous combustion. Fire prevention was instilled in me by my grand mother who was raised on a farm in the early 1900s. A lousy spark back then could send everyone to the poorhouse! ws

So I guess it went from a simple question with a little BS to a thorn under somebodies knickers. Pollution of our most important resource is not a joke. I live by a lake too. So does yachtsmanbill. This whole carbon footprint thing is an Al Gore way of controlling our thoughts and our minds in order to control the corporate universe. And the truth is Big Al is a pawn without even realizing it. So I'll use kerosene and take it to the collection station. Which was my original intent. I just didn't know what to use as a cleaner. BOO!!!

How would you even get white phosphorus? they stopped selling it eons ago.
Your right. They quit selling it. That doesn't mean there's not applications. But I haven't had anything to do with Willie Peter since 1971. And I deposited that along a hillside that ran parallel to QL9. The Lt. told me to get rid of the stuff when I left for Khe Sanh from Stud.

And I contend these were habits we all developed at an early age. I simply wanted to find out what the best "cleaner" was not the best "accelerant". I guess I went overboard. And I don't use a parts cleaner, all I've got is a tub with some brushes.

Actually I got a kick out of this thread. I spit out my coffee when I read the part about white phosphorous lol.

Can you imagine what would happen if someone tried to even get near all the flammable liquids I listed in my first post? BOOM Oh well I did get my answer. As soon as the lady that comes and helps me with my house stuff I'll go get some kerosene.

i agree with all that about the government and regulations etc...but the mixture and ingredients had me a bit concerned...sounds like you've either found a possible cure for cancer OR a definite cause for it hahaha. and NOT POKING FUN AT ALL BUT it did remind me of a thread on the HAMB about the "unadvertised uses for common household products"...one guy said he liked to use lacquer thinner or something to clean out wounds in the shop! another guy posted in response "that stuff's neurotoxic, please don't do this."

Yeah well, some people gotta learn to know the difference between what is BS and what isn't. Although that is what makes most of this kind of stuff so funny. Although I'll tell you, that "yachtsmanbill" kind of worries me. But not too much, we are all able to look past it because though he's twisted he's still alright in our book. Ya know, I think neurotoxic pretty much describes one of those women I was married to. Wow, I just figured what my next self-help book is going to be; 101 uses for lacquer thinner. And to think I thought it was only meant for gravy.

I always thought laquer thinner and duct tape was the triage treatment for wounds in the shop... did I miss something??? ws
