8BA fuel pump pushrod bushing anti squirter

If you install an electric fuel pump on your 8BA and are concerned about "plugging" the fuel pump push rod bushing you might try this. I made a new oil filler with internal threads that bolts to where the original fuel pump was and then made a "screw in cap" with a long rod and "plug" on the end. The plug is screwed onto the rod and then peened over so it won't come loose. Coarse pitch threads on the top piece allow for quick removal. When you screw in the cap the "plug" comes to rest right on top of the bushing and blocks the flow of misty oil. I did not remove the bushing. Still has good oil pressure. However, it is my understanding that on an 8BA you don't have to plug the bushing hole to maintain oil pressure. Plugging it just prevents oil from squirting up into the valve chamber.

Good idea but I know someone who did basically the same thing and had a noticable drop in oil pressure. Solved that by making the plug long enough to cover the pushrod lubricating hole in the bushing. (see sketch)

Now that is a really good idea. I didn't know there was that little hole in the side of the 8BA bushing. When I have access to a lathe, I'll modify mine. What is the distance from the top of the bushing to that little hole? Also what is the ID of the bushing hole.I never removed any so I don't know. Thanks.JIM

Just make it the size of a pushrod. There should be no reason to lose oil pressure as the rod is a slip fit in the bushing. There is no seal there.

The distance from the top of the bushing to the oil hole is .650 you can go another .650 to the bottom of the bushing...the inside diam. of the bushing is .437

When rebuilding a Flathead, I remove the bushing and install a pipe plug. Then I install the rear cam bearing 90*. Another method would be to braze the hole shut and reinstall it. This is called plan ahead.
