My trans. has started jumping out of 3rd gear going up long hills. It is a stock trans. Any ideas what is wrong with it?

Thanks
Jack

Could be a few things but when it happened to me it was the gear on third worn out causing the torque to make it twist away from itself. Easiest thing to do first is to pull the shift tower and make sure that is functioning properly and the ball on the end is not worn.

Not only can the ball be worn, but the shifting forks where it rides could be worn as well. Fixing half the problem will result in an half fixed solution.... In this situation, you would have a very large "neutral" area in the shift pattern. Jim

So -- if the problem is a "vast" problem, if you fixed half of it you would then have a "half-vast" problem? :D

For now I use a bungee cord to "band-aid" the temporary situation. That should be solved alltogether when I get my new ****** installed.

one of mine jumped out of 3rd like that. the trans was ok turned out to be a broken and fatigued rear motor mounts. changed them have had no more problem...Dave

I knew people would mention a few more things. I was just trying to point him in the right direction to start with inspecting the shift tower.

When you have the trans out the car, check the flywheel end of the input shaft for wear, often the unsealed pilot bearing locks up due to clutch dust getting into it, wearing the end of the input shaft surface. This could also cause jumping out of gear or clutch chatter. Also I could go on and on about this, after you do this your ****** will be ALOT quieter.
