does the motor mount come off
without taking off dampener?
has anybody milled the heads
around the spark plug holes
so it's easier to get socket
on the spark plugs?
The front steady rest/ mount will not come off without removing the damper.
If your plug spanner makes it hard to get to the plugs, it would be easier to grind that down or get one that fits.

I don't remember ever having a problem with my '57 T Bird using a Craftsman plug socket with its foam rubber liner. You couldn't see what you were doing but the socket went right on and there was plenty of room to turn it.
The spaces around the sparkplugs may be packed full of gunk and crud. I don't know if you've already tried cleaning them out but if not, you might check & see if that's the problem.

If you are removing the engine from the car, just remove the one bolt at the center of the steadyrest from the bottom. Then lift out the engine with the steadyrest attached to the engine. The steady rest cannot be removed without removing the damper first on conventional passenger cars. The T-Bird is a whole nother animal as Oldmics pointed out.
Use a 6-point thinwall socket on the sparkplugs. The socket will go all the way down no problem.
regarding spark plug 'landings'
