Yes, both large and small mail trucks had sliding side and interior doors. Both trucks are relatively new to Gerald, the smaller one the most rescent acquisition. Not sure how often the previous owner drove it, but hopefully Gerald gets it out regularly.
 
I can, actually, remember seeing these on the streets, still being used by the Post Office System, as a kid.
They were still using these in the early 50s, in Charleston, West Virginia.

Mike....you are correct, the postal service de commissioned them in '54. Many were said to have over 1 million miles. Many went on to be chicken coops and storage sheds.....
