351 windsor into 1958 Ranch Wagon

I have found a '78 351W w/C4 Trans to put into my '58 Ford Ranch Wagon. The wagon originally had a 332 w/ 3 spd manual.

Has anyone done this swap before? Does anyone make motor mounts for this swap?

its an easy swap.i put one in a 56.there are different mounts you can use.i used 302 truck mounts.you have to shim them about 1/2 inch where they go on the block or engine will sit to low.others use a different mount thats doesn need ajustment.someone else will come on and fill you in.

Use Anchor mount #2525 left, 2526 right, and you don't need spacers if using these. They are for newer Must and Linc MK VII. Don't forget that you'll need a front sump oil pan. For the trans mount, you may be able to use the original one by moving it a bit.

Thanks for all the info darrell & Parklane. I assume my '58 and your '56's have the same mounting ergonomics and will be the same.

In '54-'59 cars you can use Hedman headers part# 88400.The transmission mount is a Duralast 2253 $8.99 at Autozone

your going to have to change the rear gear ratio, sticks used a lot lower gear ratio than the autos, your going to need a ratio some where around 3:00 to to keep the engine from running in the 3000 rpm range on the hi way

If it was me, a AOD would be going behind the windsor.:D:D

aod are nice as long as you use one before 85 or 84, those are all hydralicly controled, no wire on them, but the way i look ar it the more gears involved the more things that can go wrong, the 302 has the power just go higer in the rear end

F-150s and Crown Vics used the AOD through the end of 93 run.

Can't say for sure, but I think that in the late 80s, they went to wire/computer, not 85.

My 93 F150 was the AOD. When it crapped out we put a 93 Crown Vic AOD in it. Worked perfect! There were some 150s in the 80s that had the EAOD.

AOD's prior to 1988 had their fair share of issues,in 1988 Ford had upgraded the valve bodies and improved internal lubrication a bunch the best AOD's to use are from 1988-93 these have all the internal upgrades and are non-computer units. You will need a TV cable I highly recommend the AOD cable from LOKAR as it is very EZ to set up and TV cable adjustment is critical to an AOD.Best site for AOD's is www.clickclickracing.com you can learn a bunch there. If you do decide to go with an AOD remember the 351W still has a 28 oz balance factor,Summit can hook you up with the correct flexplate after 1980 all 302's with AOD's had a 50 oz balance.

Ok all...next question...the steering column.

I have the 3 on the tree. I found somewhere on the web that the stick column will work just fine. If thats so, how do you know what gear your in? If not, is all I have to do is swap out the mast portion of the assembly for the auto column? I assume from a 58 or will other years work?

thanks

Bill

Swapping to an automatic column would be a better way to go and less hassle, contact www.owenssalvage.com they should have one or since many AOD's were in floor shift cars you could just keep your existing column and get the matching floor shifter.
