Where do I get a 12v battery that fits properly?

I am in the process of converting to 12v. I cannot find a 12v battery that will fit inside the standard battery hold down frame without both battery posts coming into contact with the metal frame, and that doesn't work!!!

Also I noticed the battery can't be too tall or the posts will hit the floorboard.

What brand and model # do you recommend?

I picked a used battery at a salvage yard, and had to cut away part of the hold-down bracket so it did not touch the terminals.

J Franklin....smart alec. smile. :)

I tried several battery stores but they only have batteries that are 'close'.
I believe I've seen the size listed as 'Group 25', but those batteries are too tall.
I have bought a smaller battery and I am going to modify the standard top bracket to fit the battery relatively tight.

Just wondering...I am converting to 12v and I don't see any mention of what happens to the starter...I am going to show how dumb I am, but won't the starter run backwards if I don't change something????

Fortunately, no. The starter is series-wound, which means that the polarity reverses in both the field and the armature. Two negatives make a positive, so to speak, so the starter runs the same way no matter the polarity.

I cut little semi-circles out of the holddown frame to clear the terminals on the battery I used.

My notes say groupe 25 for a 12 volt battery to fit the model A . The last one that I got came from Wal Mart. You don't have to worry with a kid behind the counter that will ask what the battery is for. You can look at the batteries on the shelf, measure and pick a purdy. I use the battery corner hold downs that were used from may 1929 till end according to the Bratton catalog. These battery hold down clamps are listed on page 32 of the 2011 Brattons catalog, part number 6870 and list for $4.80 per pair. I have used these battery clamps on my roadster with good results.

I have the same battery as Purdy. There is a plastic spacer under the battery to hold it up tight to the hold-down clamps. It was like that when I bought it.

I thought a group 25 was right, too, but when I tried to put the square battery hold down frame (Bratton's 6880, pg 33) on the battery I realized it would touch both battery posts!!! I was thinking of modifying it...

I think you are correct...I should use the stamped steel battery hold down clamps. They will prevent the battery posts from coming into contact. Thanks.
I didn't even realize there were different hold down clamps!!

I love the Ford Barn!!!!! :D
