Ford Script stamped logo

That may or may not be an infrindgement on FMCO patent rights ,i suggest you research this more. OMO ken ct.

If your making one for yourself no big deal but if you sell the parts you need a license from Ford to do so. The cost is quite high.

After ignoring abuses of its copy and trademark rights for decades, Ford now has an activity whose sole responsibility is to enforce those rights. Like Jerry says, the risk is negligible for one or two for your own use. Moving beyond that exposes you to the wrath of Ford, who has federal law on its side. They do, however, have a licensing process in place to grant you the right to use their trademarks on parts and many reproduction parts producers (Drake, Carpenter, Vintique, and Nacewicz to name a few) operate under this process. It involves the payment of a royalty, which is normal in such a licensing arrangement, but also the parts covered under the arrangement have to meet Ford's standards.

All the carmakers do this now, but I think it was Ford that started licencing. This, after Henry Ford himself was sued and won the Seldon Patent infringement lawsuit.

What panel are you making that has the Ford script stamped into it? I can't think of one, embossed yes, stamped no, at least that I can think of right off.

Alan,

There's about an eighty year gap of indifference between the Seldon patent infringement case and Ford's new-found religion about its copy and trademark rights.

I don't think Ford started the licensing of its brand name,at least in the old car hobby. I remember reading it was Chrysler Corp and it was over a poorly made model car that did not even resemble Chrysler styling, this was only a few years ago. I think Ford got on board after they were sued for a 64-66 Mustang gas tank failure and it was proved it was a poorly made repro. Probably enough people burned to death with the Ford original tanks that also doubled as "trunk floor",this was years before the infamous Pinto explosions. The licensing besides royaly paying also puts sole liability on repro maker,I imagine or helps differentiate original Ford vs fake.

The only panel I can think of would be the tailgate on the pickup truck.

I know a body man who does the Ford logo by hand whenever he makes a repro, to have a two piece die made would be a very expensive exercise.

Lawson, Ford Jeep sheet metal parts were stamped before the govt told them not to.

OK. Now that you mention it, I remember Jeeps had a lot of parts with Ford Script stamped on them. But hey, I have been out of the Army for 56 years, and the old gray matter is thinning out some. lol

dave--- i don`t know what ford standards you are talking about but some of the ford script repro parts i`ve seen wouldn`t meet any original ford standards. a lot of manufactures pay for the licence and continue making inferior parts and ford doesn`t give a hoot as long as they get their residuals. more like a licence for manufactures to dupe you into believing it must be good if ford licenced it. i don`t believe ford ever inspects or tests any of these ford script parts for fit, accuracy, quality, or if they even will work. i wish they would come clean and state exactly what ford licenced product really means. just another money grab.---- barry

ford gp---- believe it or not i`ve seen guys make ford script and other dies out of bondo with good success if you are only making a few. they did an article about this in a rod mag about 10 yrs ago. it was a ford script in a custom tailgate using an original ford script to make male female dies out of bondo. maybe someone remembers which magazine. ---barry

I have not heard of Ford requiring any kind of quality and the parts I've seen are often poor. They do require lots of liability insurance. The trademark laws require that you attempt to defend your trademark or loose it which drives some of the suits. Helps prove they defend the trademark. Once they license it then they want insurance to protect themselves. As Ford collectors we should be happy they license the trademark as they could just say NO.

As well as the Ford name they have started licensing the parts numbering system. Some of the suppliers have stopped using Ford parts numbers in their catalogs rather than paying the price.

Wow , Looks like I need to check this, I was thinking I would get a e-mail when people replyed to this post , now I have it set up so I can get a e-mail. Yes I have made some body pannels for the Ford GP. I have took a Logo out of a Ford truck tailgate and tig welded it into the new rear pannel. I was just thinking that there would be someone that would have the Dies to stamp my blank rear (repair Pannels) and would charge me the Fees so Ford would be happy. I understand all the red tape, I do not need to get in trouble over making about 25 pannels. If I have to buy 25 repro tailgates than that is what I will do. Here is a rear pannel of a Ford GP. Thank you everyone for the info !!!!
