Is it worth buying

Bart, even though it has one tailight the hood looks like a 38 deluxe. It has the "parrot beak" style hood. The 38 standard hood is flat across the bottom like a 37 and there is a raised rib all the way around the edge of the hood. If all the stainless trim is there for the car(especially the hood stainless) that is worth a lot of money, whether it is a standard or a deluxe.

Bart, here we go again. Guesses are worth nada. The car, including the hood, is a '39 Standard.

Edit: TJ, I'm surprised at you! Of all poeple, you should know the difference between those hoods:
38 Standard: no trim, with ridge.
38 DeLuxe: with trim, no ridge.
39 Standard: no trim, no ridge.

38 deluxe and 39 sedan rear fenders will fit 39 coupes, 38 deluxe and standard coupe rear fenders are unique. You wont have to change cowls...only 39 deluxe (and later) are different.

Al, you might want to review Bart 78's photo of the tudor. The hood that is on it is a 38 deluxe. Now I refer you to page 2-24 of the V-8 Club's 38-39 book. Check the paragraph regarding trim mouldings and stripes. The early 38 standards had pinstriping. In January 1938 Ford began using rustless steel moulding strips on the body of the standard cars. I suspect that the mouldings would be on the hood to line up with the body trim. You might want to review the photo on the back cover of the 38-39 book.

if you are going to do the metal fabrication yourself it may be worth it....it may be more cost effective to restore the coupe to what it originally was from the factory...it depends on how much money you want to spend,,,,there are gobs of deal out there now!!

I cant decide what I want to do. Finding 38 standard parts has been a pain. I could keep it a 38 standard or make a 38 deluxe I would do the metal work myself. Or go with makeing it a 37 that has tons of parts for sale and I have a 37 hood and a few other parts. Either way I will buy the sedan to have around and something with it one day. I found a 40 coupe that I think I have the guy talked into getting rid of. Its a nice car needs restored but its been kept in a barn and no rust on the car.

Tom, I'll tell you the same! I do think you've been confused this time in thinking we're talking about '38 standards. Not the case here. Look at Barts pics again and you'll see on both pics the trim strip mounting holes on the doors and running back to the wheel well, a little more than an inch below the belt. The belt, remember, is the continuation of the hood line on the '39 Standard. You'll see no mounting holes on the hood, as the trim is on the hood sides for the '39 Standard. The '39 Standard hood is very similar to the '38 DeLuxe, but will not fit the '38 DeLuxe. Note also, for the kicker in this discussion, the hood pictured is not broken in the usual way that most all '37 & '38 hoods are broken. All '39 hoods have two redesigned hood props that don't destroy hoods.

[/IMG] These are 39 standard hoos sides. I never said it was a 38 he told me it was I told him they were 39 hood sides.

Al, you are the one who lectured me that the 38 standard did not have stainless trim on the hood. I am well aware of the hood differences. The computer photo is not clear enough to really determine where the holes are for the trim. Maybe you should go back and re-read the 38-39 book on the 38 standard cars.

39 standard the hood sides on this car are the same as the ones in the sedan I am looking at.

Re: 38 Standards

As correctly stated, early 38 Standard = pinstripe on hood, Late 38 Standard = stainless steel trim on hood

Tom, I'll bite my tongue on the '38 Standard trim. I was thinking it was on the hood sides, not the hood itself. We of course do agree on the stripe/trim question.

I'll stand by my call on the car (and hood) being a '39 Standard, though. The hood has no trim mounting holes. Grrr!

He said 1200, I was going to use it for some parts. But that is before I saw the pics. I would allmost hate to cut up the car. If I get it I might restore it to haul the kids in. He said its a 38 deluxe but the hood sides are from a 39 standard.
Bart, Anytime you can get an early ford as complete as that, it is a win ,win situation. two years ago I purchased a 39' dlx sedan for 800.00 that was far worse than that and I parted it out, making 2,500 witch went a long way to help in the restoration of my 37'. If you have the skills it takes to put that car on the road without paying a bunch for outside labor than that is a good deal! either way you can't loose!
