How Young is too Young?

Thanks gang, I don't think we will be driving home in the A but it should be the first summer for sure now :-)

There have been hundreds whose first ride in a Model A was "during" birth :>). That's carrying it to extreme but tens of thousands have been brought home from the hospital in a Model A.

There is no reason you can't take them as soon as they can be put in a car seat.
I always tell young kids on tour it's like having 25 sets of grandparents all trying to please them.

My son Danny had his first ride in the back of the Tudor at about 2 months. He is almost 5 months old now. He loves the sound of the Model A. If he is crying, it shuts him right up for the duration of the ride. I installed seatbelts in the front and rear. The spring seats are squishy, but you can tighten the seat base down pretty well with lap belts. The Model A is not as safe as the modern car, so we give rides sparingly. I also added LED taillights and a third LED window-mount brake light for safety. I also installed a trunk rack to put tools and luggage in the rear and out of the passenger cabin.

From a legal perspective, in the state of NJ there are 2 parts to the car seat law. The first part telling you kids must be in seats and the details of age and weight. From reading just that part you would assume all kids must be belted.

BUT

I have since learned of the second part. The part that adds in car seats are only required in cars that originally came with seat belts. This was from prosecutors who were aware of the second part.

So check your state laws. Do not trust what the cops tell you. Here in NJ I can tell you most cops on the street are not aware of the second part of the law.

That being said. It aint worth it. The most minor of accidents can be bad for kids. The 14 years on the rescue squad gave me a better perspective- I was just going around the block...

Put some seatbelts in the car/ truck and put the car seat in and go. You should wear seat belts too as they may just save your life.

Ive grown up in a model A. My first ride was a couple months after i was born. I'm now 18 years old, and love the model a hobby. The key is to hook them while their young, but dont force them into the hobby to much. because then you will just burn the kids out. Ive seen it happen multiple tiimes.

That is exactly how i was hooked. i was at club meetings, shows and swap meets with my dad since i could start to walk and my first ride was when i was months old.

now im a model a addict! and im old 19 years old!

I know anything I say is pretty much overkill at this point, but consider the fact that the Model A was a car when it was new. Not an antique car, not a special kind of car, just a car. So, if you would drive your child around in a modern car, why not a Model A? (I'm not forgetting about seat belting and all that, it is just a little beyond my point :) )

Great video !
Now, you have you a running "A" Model. All work done now, is just improving your car.
Thanks,
MIKE :)

Maybe, you can start them too young !
First photo is my son, at about age six, "drag racing" my 1934 Phaeton.
Second photo is of him, actually drag racing his 1966 Mustang, at age forty three.
The videos, "Horsepower Therapy 1, 2 & 3" are of him "playing" with his Mustang.
He is serious about this. He has run in the 9s, in the 1/4 mile, with a small block Ford.
MIKE :)

In October of 1936 in Chicago I was brought home from the hospital in my Dad's 1931 Roadster. That was their only car.

Both of our children, in 1968 and 1971, came home from the hospital at age three days in our 1930 Coupe. Three of our grandchildren came home from the hospital at age two days in the same 1930 Coupe. All of the grandchildren ask for rides in the Model A's for "mystery trips" to Mickey Dee's. The Williams family starts early!

I'm a medical "mystery." My D.N.A. tests always lists MODEL A among their strange symbols!

On day two of my daughter's life, my wife and I drove her home from the hospital in our 1931 Model A Cabriolet.

After twelve years of being hauled around in the rumble seat, or in the back of our Tudor....she still enjoys every minute of the ride.
