Cam Bearing Installation

Hi Guys,

It's a 1925 engine. I'm getting ready to reassemble the engine and sort of making a dry run, carefully looking at parts for flaws, fits and function.

I notice that the clam shell cam bearings have flat notches machined into one end of the castng and it's obvious to me that these flats would be mated together when assembled to the cam and clipped. What I'm not sure of is, are these bearing halves assembled to the cam with the flats pointed to the front of the block or to the rear.
Could you experienced mechanics please help me out with this one?

Thanks a bunch, Racemo

The center cam bearing is tapered on both ends, the end with the large notch cut away, and small cut away, are the mated ends. the notch goes to the rear, and faces up to catch oil. the front one has a notch in 1/2, and it goes to the rear, after you key it together. If either does not Key, before the c ring, don't use them, and make sure the end play is not over .002 may be you could get by with .003, but not over. Herm.

Thanks Kohnke,

You senior members do have the answers. That explaination was just what I needed. The endplay ended up at 0.003", should be OK.

Thanks again... Mose Nowland, Dearborn, MI
