1936 Radio Hums

My radio hums, and the hum gets louder with the tone control. The hum does not get louder or softer with the volume control. No stations are ever tuned in....any ideas what the problem could be? The previous owner thought maybe the antenna.

Hi chrismac52,

I would suspect faulty filter or suppression condensers in the ******** (DC - AC) conversion circuit or the main filter condenser in the HV circuit.

Has the radio been rebuilt by a reputable radio guy? If so all of the wax and electrolytic condensers should have been replaced at that time.

Cheers,

Meric.

Hello Chrismac 52,
I second all that meric42 just said. Constant hum is classic symptom of faulty filter capacitors - could be other things but I would check that first. Also, if you ever replace the ********, even if it is with a solid state one, replace the buffer capacitor as well. All the capacitors are not expensive and not hard to find. Check out http://www.tubesandmore.com/. for caps. For tubes - http://www.vacuumtubes.net/
