Ole Bill,
For me it's not about "Restoration", "purity" or a 100 point AACA show car. I keep 6 volts because it gives me a feel of tradition and originality, besides the fact that I have a lifetime supply of 6 volt bulbs and other stuff my Grandpa left behind.
The one time I got stuck (because a distributor failure had me cranking till the battery went down), I got a quick boost from a 12v car anyway.
I still believe that a dual 6/12 volt battery system is a "patch" or "band-aid" or "fix" because since your car has been rebuilt as you describe, there is no reason she won't start up each time and be very dependable.
Personally, as a pragmatic or practical matter, I'd swap the whole thing to 12V before I'd bother rigging up a secondary system. For virtually the same amount of work, you're done with it and at least accomplished something that most regular people understand.
You talk about tight clearances on your new rebuild (which should free up in a short time), but you never said you had a starting problem.
I understand ingenuity and experimentation so if you said you wanted to create something "cool" I get it. But you say you want something dependable and I think you already have that.
