Vented gas cap ? Gas tank sealer

Hi to all....questions,

Does the 55 Ford require a vented or unvented gas cap ?

My inline fuel filter shows I have rust in my tank...has anyone sealed the inside of their tank and would you do it again.... or.... buy a new tank for $250. plus shipping ?

Does the gas tank in a 55 Ford have baffles ?

Thanks in advance for your input ...John in CT

My 55 is a sedan, it has no baffles inside the tank, and I think the cap is unvented because it is so low and pointed to the rear. I was lucky, my tank is clean inside. If one is badly rusted, I would buy new. I have seen people with sealed tanks have trouble with the sealer plugging things up.

If you do decide to go with sealer, you must make certain that compressed air is blown into the fuel outlet fitting, otherwise the sealer will block it up inside and you will not get any gas out of your fuel line.

To my knowledge, the gas tank is vented regardless of what type of cap is used. The vent tube dumps out just above and to the left of the gas tank filler neck

Paul...I thought they did also as I know my 56 t-bird has a vented cap...but... the only ones I have seen from the major vendors are non vented for 55... but as Dave said, the tank is vented anyway so I guess it does not matter......John in CT

I don't know about the '55 tanks but my '56 Fairlane is a vented tank, and ONLY a non-vented cap will fit it correctly. The lock tabs are different depth betwx vented & non-vented caps.

Ford # for the non-vented cap is AB-9030-C, if I remember correctly I got mine at Concours but other sources may have them too.

Link to the cap on Concours: http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta%7Edyndetail%7EZ5Z5Z50000051e%7EZ5Z5Z5AAQUA%7EP21.95%7E%7E%7E%7ES2RV0WRZAC16715424650f%7EZ5Z5Z5%7EZ5Z5Z50000051e

There's been considerable discussion about this issue over on the HAMB in the '52-56 Fords forum.

My tank still has the original gas cap. There is a round spring steel surface on the back side of the cap that fits tight against the filler neck flange. No air can escape between the cap and the filler neck. 55 and 56 tanks have a vent tube for the purpose of allowing air to enter while fuel is being consumed.
