Pucker in top covering

Hey Guys,
When I got my Special Coupe, whoever put the top covering on didn't do a very good job. I can live with most of it however, over the door is what looks like a gob of padding. Any way I can lift up the covering from the gutter and smooth it out? Someone said I'm stuck with it. I don't want to open it up without some guidance.
Any help would be appreciated.
Pete

How about creating a small hole to let the air out and then injecting a small amount of glue and pressing firmly? This should smooth it out and seal the hole as the glue oozes out.

Oh boy.

Is that a "pucker" or a "bubble" ?

Well, if this helps make your decision, that's not the correct top material either.

Should be "long/short grain sedan decking".

Farrell in Vancouver has done a full frame-off on a Special Coupe and could probably talk to you about whether or not this is "fixable".

I would think "not", as the material is laid-out over the roof, tacked at the front, then stretched and tacked around the remaining edges, pulling on the excess material along the edges to stretch it out. Once the sedan-decking is nice and smooth ( "right"), then the excess material is trimmed away from the edges and the drip / trim mouldings are nailed-on.

Since your material has already been trimmed, I don't know how you would stretch it back to re-nail...

My Special Coupe got a poor "top-job" too... in black canvas "sport-coupe" material... but the car needs many, many other things at this point in time, and the present top is water-tight, so I'm leaving it alone for now.

Hopefully Farrell will chime-in, if not, send him a PM...

Almost anything is doable but it may not be easy. Be sure to have a "plan B". That particular location is where a panel over the door joins the quarter. You may find a problem with the seam that needs to be addressed.

Well Peter, being you live in my back yard I might be able to help out. I mean no disrespect but looking at the drip rails with the poprivets I think you may be in for a real nightmare. Are both side like this or just the drivers side. It might be salvageable especially if only one side needs attention. Give me a call one night this week nd I can talk you through it or we can arrange a time to look at it together. I live in University Place just above Stielacoom. If you can drive it up just take the Dupont exit. Call me 253-565-5549

I would try parking it out in the hot sun for a few days and the heat may help. I've seen worse wrinkles with original type top material smooth out after a few days in the sun. If its padding wadded up under the top material it probably won't help.

Pete, from what I can see you do have a series of issues with the roof.
Quick question, how is the interior?
I think this may be easier to pull the drivers side cardboard panels,
(they are easily renailed back on) then de-tack a short section of the roof liner so you can see up into the wire. Try a short aluminum yard stick grind it to look like a giant tongue depressor, put a bend to match the curve of the roof and carefully massage the area til its flat. You could prolly watch your progress standing on the running board and working through the open drivers window. But! If its glued........you're screwed.
I am only thinking this roofosuction procedure may work better fron the inside as the head liner is more forgiving, and likley to have more material to retack or staple down than the outside roof material.
I like the glue idea too, and the hot day is a must. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the invite Bob but considering Don's comments and other chores needed to do I'll probably just leave well enough alone for now since I have a feeling it's glued on to boot. It doesn't leak however. I still need to get the body off etc. so lots of other things to do in proper sequence. I was thinking their may have been a quick fix but such is not to be the case.
Thanks Again all of you,
Pete
