Engine Serial # Not Visible

I wouldn't stir up a possible problem. I stamp the registration numbers on a brass plate, trim it nicely, and rivet the plate to the front hinge post, and the registered and insured number is on the vehicle. If you want to look for trouble, grind it smooth and have the State Police use some acid to raise the number. They've done it before.

I just went at it with some emery cloth and tried to smooth out the raised pitting. Still nothing visible, although after staring at it for quite a while I think that I saw the face of a saint. That rules out Henry! I also seemed to notice the outlines of a number when viewing the photo that I posted, but it doesn't show up when holding a light from the side (or any angle). I even tried using paper and the side of a soft pencil, but still nothing visible. I might try using an ink roller and press paper after inking the area. How would I know if I have a diamond block?
Personally, I think you've been into the cooking wine, or are you lacing your coffee with lacquer thinner!!

Well, at least I'm not the only one seeing ghost numbers! There might be something to the remark about fumes affecting my cognitive abilities.

Following up on Carl's suggestion, I took a few photos of the date stamp to the left of the diamond mark. Diamond engine - has a nice ring to it. My eyes tell me that it says "L-31", which I'm guessing means the engine was built in Dec. 1931? Is that "post-production"? You tell me if you see different letters and numbers. Just remember the fumes and take a second look.

I'd agree with "L 31" but cannot say what that means. One way to get more clarity would be to spray on some WD-40 and then rub most off - seems to make things stand out more clearly.

According to "The Early Ford V8 As Henry Built It" they made 15 Model B engines in November 1931 and 1848 in December 1931. It is all in how they defined it but I could understand calling December '31 post production. I realize that production of Model A engines extended well beyond that time.
