Hi,
A guy like me just can't leave things alone.
My Tillotson carburetor ran great with nice color to spark plugs W16Y, but am searching for more performance. Like many of us, I can't just leave well enough alone and enjoy what I have.
I bought a restored Model B carburetor and installed it on my car today. I took a test drive and drove with the GAV turned in or off as suggested. I stopped a few times for minor adjustments with my screw driver to smooth out the idle, it runs great, but when I got home and read the plugs they are very black and sooty.
I adjusted the spark plug gap from .030 then to .035 and finally to .040 then more test drives and still very sooty with the same W16Y plugs. I then changed spark plugs from W16Y to C-16-C with a gap of .035, same situation, car runs nice, but very black sooty plugs.
Any suggestions would appreciated for getting clean spark plugs while driving with my Model B carburetor installed. By the way, I do not have an air cleaner on either carburetor.
Thank you in advance.

Jim,

Are you running the B with GAV open 1/4 turn?

Model B carbs are designed to run with GAV closed after warm up ... that could be why the plugs are sooty.

Also W16Y plugs are hotter than C16C (C16C's will make situation worse) ... W16Y is better choice for sooty plugs.

Try closing GAV after warm up and put W16Ys back in.

If W16Ys are still sooted up it might take a 5 - 10 mile drive at 45 or so to clean them up.

Idling and slow driving will soot up plugs.

I am going to my Tillotson back on before dark and try it one more time, before night fall.

HOTTER DOWN TO COLDER - Spark Plugs

For those who may be interested, the following 7/8"-18 spark plugs will fit the Model A and were available as of a few years back. They are also not all the ones that I know of.

Champion (hotter down to colder):

W95D (562)
W89D (589 TT15 )
W16Y (561)
C95F (595)
W20 (520 )
W14 (3076 TT10 )
W10
W85N
W80N

NOTE: Highlighted items were added by me:

5XX are new Champion numbers from local CarQuest.
3076 is Autolite
TTxx are Motocraft

Also the original 3X and W18 which Champion lists as norm. Also according to Champion, the W16Y is hotter than the W18 at low speed but cooler at high speeds over 5500 RPM....(over 5500 RPM? ... maybe Speedy ED J, Pete, George Miller, Dennis Pierce would be interested... maybe even Brent)

Motorcraft (hotter down to colder):

TT15 (the same as Champion W89D)
TT10 (the same as Champion W14)
TT8 (the same as Champion W14)
TT4 (the same as Champion W10)

Autolite:

3076 (the same as Champion W14 and Motorcraft TT10)

Mopar (hotter down to colder):

P-9-7S
P-9-6S
P-9-5S

Prestolite (hotter down to colder)

78-10
78-8

Stitt (hotter down to colder)

137 BSP
197
147 B
13/10

Yep, My results vary. My experience with many C16C years ago is that they are way too cold and easy to foul and very troublesome.
