No room for more trucks

When a guy desperately needs a new project but his line-up of old ford trucks fills his covered parking spots, he needs to direct his attention to something with a smaller footprint. I built this diesel powered motorcycle primarily from local finds and my 40+ year collection of junk. I started this project by buying the engine in May, then the rolling frame on june 26 2026. I was riding it at our antique steam/gas/stationary/tractor event on July 29. Keep in mind that on July 19 I sawed through my left thumb from the pad to the knuckle diagonally, removing the top 1/3rd of my thumb. No ER on the NW corner of the state would touch it so I ended up at the Harborview trauma center in Seattle. No problem... The engine's hand crank operates on the right!

Thanks, yah I got me a helmet last week on the mainland. The short thumb sure makes it hard to start a nut or bolt in the confined spaces we haunt. When I got home from Seattle the top of my thumb with it's nail and all the meat around and under it was on the tablesaw right where I'd left it. I didn't think to suggest to the emt's that they go in the shop and search. Too bad, it woulda made a perfect patch to sew on. Instead, they rolled up the pad and sewed it over where the nail had been. Pretty ugly. But I move ahead!

I had a similar digit loss, or near loss. They did sew my nail back on because the nail bed was still on it. Touch and go for a few days whether I would keep my finger. Still have it.

Now back to the cycle. SUPER cool. Popped up on my You tube feed the other night.

There was a show on years ago called Junk yard wars. You would have been the grand champion.

I had a small cut on the tip of my thumb from my tablesaw blade. I quickly pulled my hand back and before blood filled the notch, I could see the shape of the alternating top-bevel teeth of the blade in the bottom of the notch in the flesh and in my thumb nail. Shaped like a "W".

My uncle back in the '30s while working in a cabinet shop was so shocked when a co-worker cut the first joint of a finger that he grabbed the cut end and stuck it into the hot glue pot and put it in place, and wrapped it tight. After the doctor looked at things and saw some color they decided to see what would transpire if left as is. Well the fellow ended up keeping the fingertip.

Sorry to hear about your injury. The bike is cool, how many horsepower does the diesel put out?, a torque monster for sure. Once you get the gearing correct you’ll be motorcrossing for sure.

My son went down the side of his left pointer finger with a power mitre box saw. A skin graft from the edge of his hand and he’s back in business……now to the motorcycle…….
Just when I think you’re not trying to surprise us anymore……you go and do this!!!…..Mark

A machinist at my father's shop returned to the shop to pick up his paycheck days after losing his right thumb to a punchpress. He was asked how it happened, so he proceeded to demonstrate by losing his left thumb in the same punchpress.

My father himself lost three fingers in a similar manner, a wrench falling from the press bed to the foot pedal.

Our digits are always the first into battle and most expendable.

Are there any taxidermy guys on the island? maybe have that thumb stuffed and mounted as a reminder to be more careful !

It's in a jar (I keep by the door)....

Not looking fwd to the cold weather. I bet I have 5 outa 10 with serious repairs.

Well, my Dad, a tool maker always stressed SAFETY ... then shoves his left hand under a running mower removing 2 finger tips. Don't be too hard on yourself Gary.
I still LOVE THE "LINE UP" at The Jail Bar Ranch.

Puts out a measley 8hp at 3000 rpms, but yes, it's more about the torque. Until last June I'd never heard of a Comet (CVT) clutch. Someone explained "It's like a snowmobile clutch" Hmmm, what's a snowmobile? "Or like the clutch on an ATV" A what? Never saw under the hood one one a them either? But it's got it's share of strange qualities, or some might call hurdles. Gives me something to think about when I awake at 4:30 and trying to fall back asleep. I get a lot done (figured out) in that two hour period.

Sorry to hear about the thumb but the motorcycle is kool. Reminds me of when in my 20's and welding in flip flops, did the hot metal dance with a blob between my toes.

No room for this? Seen at Hershey and the photo was posted on the HAMB.

A guy only needs one jailbar woodie, but heck that was built on a 122" tonner chassis! Oh well, I probably couldn't afford enough scotchbrite and ajax cleanser to rub out all that annoying shine anyhow.
