trip away in our A

Lawrie & Cheryl at the South Australia Border with their 1928 Model A Fords

Map showing the distance from Mackay Qld, to Albany WA.
Lawrie and Cheryl are each driving their own Model A Fords.
They are taking the darker colour route 4591 Kilometers each way.
Not a trip for the feint hearted.
Australia is a B I G country.

I write that "buzz box". Spelling varies and there is no right nor wrong. You won't find it in any dictionary but every Australian knows what it is.
It is a small, usually Japanese car with a high revving engine that makes a buzzing sound as it goes down the road.

Thanks :)

We left Peterborough this morning after a cold night (4c)
we had bought some pork chops and veggies at the local IGA store, they were very nice,Mind you Cheryl is a great cook, i helped uder strick supervision 😄.
After driving from my home in gladsone Pt Agusta is the first reasonably sized town and you needed full attention.
leaving here,we debated fueling up but decided not to.
This caught me out way later when i nearly ran out on a long uphill pull.
My car has had a stromberg 97 on it since 2008 with no drama, its on gravity feed, but now towing the camper it will starve on a long pull if under 1/4 tank.
No drama , i put the 10 lts from the jerry can in to be sure.
WE stopped for our lunch at the aptly named Iron Knob.
there are some treasers here for sure, pics tell the story.model t stuff and a BB ford .
both cars are running great,
tonight's mdinner is spicey chicken with peppers 🌶️
Tomorrow we are off to Ceduna for a couple days, then the true nullabor plains start for us.aprox 1300klm with only a few fuel stops.

Todays drive was quite a drive, only 310klms, but most with a cross wind and quite hot.
fuel usage im sure went up as a result.,water temp up a tad to 83C, this was above the usual 75c,didn't use any coolant though.
Highes fuel costs todate at 2-60 ltr, with a sign on the bowser. that nice lady attendant was apologetic and said they have to,do it due to people driving off withoutnpaying,
We stopped for lunch 30 ks out of Ceduna , we were going to keep on to Ceduna, but thought a break would be better,it was ,the flies thiught zo to,there were thousands of them, they wanted our lunch too.
both cars did a great job today,oh, drivers too.
We saw some interesting stuff today, one guy walking and pulling a little swapmeet type cart and another on a push bike who videod us as we passed with only one hand on the bars.
There is sure a lot of wheat out here, miles of it.
I think i didn't drink enough water along the drive today as i felt abit off this arvo, but recovered after a nice dinner and lots of cold water.
The cars sure get a lot of attention, hence we got the best spot in the van park for tonight and tomorrow.

Glad the trip is going great!. That is a long haul for an old Model A, but the scenery has been great to see in the pictures.

Good luck on the rest of your travels "Down Und'r"

Regarding petrol pumps, by the late 70's in the US, just about all gas stations required you to prepay with cash or credit card before they would enable the pumps. You get refunded the unused money, so no extra cost, but the loss of trust was a change.

i think that will come here, but it will mean you dont have to go inside to pay, then they will miss the sales of chocolate and takeaway food items, a servo here is like a giant chocolate and sweet store.

A good day today, from Ceduna to Nullabor roadhouse, only about 280 klms, but the weather was really nice, no wind and blue skies.
Very little traffic again which is strange as this is the main east to west hyway.
stopped for smoko and man the march flies were the worst , like thousands of them,
We are stopped at the nullabor roadhouse , its a bit hot and a little wind .
along the way this morning we had a couple of sisters stop and have a chat , they had seen us way back and were impressed how we were making such good time.
they had come from perth to Mackay in a camper, then traded it in a a new 4WD and caravan and were heading back to perth.
we had a good chat and swatteted the march flies together.
At the roadhouse a man came and talked to us, he is walking from Norsman to Ceduna, pushing a sack trolly with 60 kgs of supplies on. he was very smart as he had pre done the trip in his car and at every 100klms he burried cache,of food and water, taking note of the mile marker post number
He said people were very helpful and considerate, one guy stopping on a motor cycle and asking if he needed anything, an hour or so later a car travelling in the opposite direction pulled up and gave him a bag of fresh groceries, some cold drinks, they said a motorcyclist bought the stuff at the roadhouse and gave it to them to give it to him.
pulling into the roadhouse we see these teslas recharging, they are ,like us a different mode of transport WAY out here.
tomorrow we head off early as we have a reasonable drive to Cockelbiddy at 446 klms

pics fron today
and fish and chips for dinnerlast night, i over ordered on the chips.
this is the setup for the guy walking, 80 kgs on the trolley

A big day today, 460 klms and 3 time zones that caught us out, good though, we that it was 2-30 pm and it was really 11-30 am.
There is some spectacular scenery allong the drive today, picture perfect weather and no wind,so we took quite a few oportunities to stop and take some pics ,even thought it added to our added to our travel time.
the coastline along here is special and looking south the next place is antartica, the sea is as blue as,and tonight it feels like we're there.
There are also things that im sure you would see no where else , the RFDS energency landing strips that are actually the hiway.
cars went well ,fuel costs up a bit at 3-26 ltr. and down the road a bit it was 2-96lt ,we thought that was cheap.
at the border quarantine station i pulled out of the servo to get in line and at the last second see a road train heading for the same line, he gave me a toot, and i went and apologised to,him at the stop, he smiled and said he would have squished me. i agreed
lucky we were both only going 2mph.
We saw two blokes on push bikes,6 or so old bentlys, two were the ones that raced way back, they were humming along, also 3 old Holdens, you know ,we used to make cars here.
Less flies today so lunch and smoko ,s were a bit easier.
So, all in all, a great day, cars going great Cheryls A has used maybe 1/8th on the dipstick, mine a bit more ,
Mileage so far to date,2519 or 4093 klms.
So i will do an oil and filter change tomorrow.
Lawrie
