Door handle remote spring

Working on the driver's door of my 39 coupe. The remote part for the door handle is missing the spring. The bracket that retains the shaft has one slot on each side where the tail of the spring goes to retain the spring. Does the spring slide into the rear slot towards the rear of the door or the front slot towards the front? I see no evidence where the previous spring was placed in the bracket.

Pictures of a r/h remote, if it helps.

Maybe there is a trick I didn't find; but tried to replace a spring once; ended up grinding the backside, reassembled it with the new spring and welded it back together.

Did a little looking and found some pictures of a drivers side remote to show the correct spring location.

Rich, thanks for the photos. They show the spring is mounted towards the front of the door. I got the tabs on the back bent up to remove the retainer bracket. Now we will see if they bend back down!

Heat the tabs red hot, then lightly hammer to anneal. That seems to be the trick to keep them from breaking.
Karl, I got lucky. I used a chisel the pry up the tabs on one side. Then used a chisel to barely pry up the other side. Slipped in the spring and used the vice to bend them back down. It was my lucky day! Thanks to everyone on here for the advice and photos.
