installation of molding clips

I'm trying to attach the door molding but i don't understand how those clips work.
Should the clip first slide into the molding and then in the hole in the door?
If so, how stays the clip in the hole? (it don't stay in place...)
Or should the clip first put in the hole in the door and then ply the molding over it?
Again, how does the clip stay in place?
(it falls off very easily...)

grtz,

Most clips were installed to the molding prior to fitting it to the body. I don't know about the 56 models but the earlier models generally have several clips for each trim piece that are held with nuts inside the door. The rest were just the normal spring clip. This kept the molding in place better. A person has to have the body parts manual for the specific year and body type to get information about the part number and illustrations of what they look like.

A lot of the special clips haven't been available for a while so folks replace them with modern type replacements from Auveco and other sources.

Another place that has all kinds of clips is Restoration Specialties in PA.

A good clip is the butterfly clips that have a threaded stud. In addition, there are clips that have a solid piece that goes inside the trim but are easily trimmable to fit inside the moldings and have a stud.

I have bought a complete clip-kit for my Vickie.
@ Mercman: I found the same video but the clips in my picture are different on the backside.
@ Kultulz: I have installed several moldings already and I struggle only with the clips for the checkmark molding on the door. I think 35 dollars plus 30 dollars shipping is a little bit to much.
I will ask the vendor of the clip-kit for more information.

Thnx!

For example: here is a picture of the installation of several moldings such as the molding on top and side of the rear fender and part of the"crown"

I vaguely remember those clips that a person has to bend the tab to seat them on the body. Cars like the Crown Victoria required them to get creative with retainer clips for all the different trim pieces that had to go on and conform to all the different curves on the body. I remember some of those being hard to figure out if a person hadn't used them before. I was lucky to have a few old body men around when I was a kid. They could tell you how to negotiate them so as not to damage things coming off the body. Once you could see how they work, it was no problem. The 58 Buick was a real trim hog of a car and the Mercury Turnpike Cruisers were another one.

Where did you find a COMPLETE KIT?

I found the kit at Tee-bird products.
Bill (from Teebird products) has provided me with information so this weekend I try again,
Info is: the small lip into the hole in the sheetmetal and pinch the large lip with pliers and the clip should stay.
Thnx for all the help!

grtz
